Question about Magic Chef Refrigerators

2 Answers

My magic chef fridge (Model CTN1511GEW) was running fine. We went away for a few days and turned the refrigerator portion from cool setting seven down to five. When we returned in three days we set it back to seven. It has been 48 hours and the lower rerigerator will not go back to full cold. So far the freezer seems uneffected. The latest issue is that the motor located in the freezer portion is not making a loud noise.

You will have to do manual defrost reset procedure once.Once this is done the refrigerator will again start running to its regular cycle. The procedure for manual defrost procedure is as follows:---- First unplug the unit from main power outlet. Then empty whole unit completely. Then keep both the doors open. Wait for 24 hours. All the ice collected on the coils and in the freezer section will get melted. Clean the water from the sections. Then Connect the power cord of the unit to main power outlet after 24 hours/.Then set the temperature to normal in both fridge and freezer section. It will take near to 4 hours to get run in its proper cooling cycle.---------- This will solve the issue.----------- As you mentioned in your question that refrigerator was working fine before you went away for few days, so this procedure should reset the refrigerator to its regular working cycle.--------- But in case the reset procedure is not helping and still the same over frost problem is getting again n again then there is problem with defrost assembly. If it's again building up ice that means the unit is not defrosting. It's starting the cooling procedure, and then while defrosting, it's not working. The defrost assembly consists of three main parts. The defrost thermostat, the defrost heater and defrost board. Any of the one is not functioning. When thermostat sense the maximum cooling, it triggers the defrost heater to start heating and this defrosts the ice collected on the coils and the system works. Both thermostat and heater are controlled by defrost board. First the thermostat and defrost heater to be checked, if both check ok by meter and visually, then its defrost board causing the problem. You can get required parts from from online sites like: --- www.repairclinic.com or from searspartsdirect online site. --------- But as per your problem, the manual defrost reset procedure should solve your problem. ---------- This should help.Thanks.Helpmech.

Hi,

If the unit is frosted then usually one of the defrost components has failed. The defrost timer, defrost heater, or defrost thermostat. Also check the damper door that is providing proper air flow or not. Actually the fridge gets its cold air from the freezer through a vent (damper) between the freezer and fridge. The fan in the freezer blows air through it. There is a flap you adjust with the fridge temp control. Make sure it's opening and closing when you adjust the fridge temp.
Check the back wall or floor of the freezer section for frost. Check the freezer /evaporator fan to see if it is running. Check the condenser coils (under the unit) for blockage from dust. Check the condenser fan (under the unit) to see if it is running. Check the dusty coils on the outside of the refrigerator and that fan are probably working OK. But you have another fan and set of coils inside the freezer compartment. If the defroster is not working these coils can frost up and not allow the fan to circulate cold air from the freezer into the refrigerator section.

The fan may become noisy and makes a loud groaning noise instead. If the fan is causing the noise, just open the freezer door and push in any fan/light switches. If the noise is louder when the door is open, the evaporator fan motor is the cause. It can't be repaired. You must replace it.

Please get back to us if you have further query else please accept the suggestion.

    Hi,

    Thanks for contacting Fixya.com

I have already told you what you have to check if the refrigerator keeps frosting up. You have to check for faulty defrosting components like the defrost timer, heater and thermostat. Then if the damper door is damaged or faulty you need to replace the damper motor. Then if it is not a frost free model make sure the door is sealed tight when closed if it is not air gets in and will cause it to frost up,to check the door seal. Do not open the door for at least 8 hrs, then run your hand around the outside of the door at the point where the seal meets the fridge any moisture indicates a leak and needs to be corrected replace the seal. If it is a frost free model the defrost cycle is not working and you need to get the defrost components to be checked.

    Thankyou.

Magic Chef Refrigerator has stopped cooling adequately.

Check the compressor and the Relay, the relay is located on the compressor itself. you should have full voltage to both of those. If oyu have voltage to the relay and not the compressor then the relay is bad. If you have power to both and the compressor will not kick on then you have a bad compressor and it is best to just replace the fridge

Could also be begining of a defrost problem.

Magic chef side by side heating instead of cooling :-(

Gee, I hope you didn't throw this one away. The cooling settings between the two sides are out of balance, or something is blocking the airflow between the freezer and the refrigerator. Make sure the ducts that blow air are not blocked, set both sides on a medium setting, and give it some time (12-24 hours) to equilibrate. Also make sure the fans are running and the coils are free of dust. I have to clear the coils of my current refrigerator once a week from accumulated cat toys. Generally the cat alerts me long before the fridge does.

Our Magic Chef fridge model # MCBR1000W does not seem to be keeping the fridge part cool enough, but still keeps the items in the freezer section frozen. The compressor is working, so not sure why this is...

yes the freezer door not closing properly will effect the refrigerator. also check in the freezer back wall and bottom for any frost buildup. If so, it is not defrosting as it should.
  • possible causes:
  1. bad defrost timer
  2. bad defrost heater (in freezer)
  3. bad thermo switch in freezer
If you don’t know what these are then unplug the machine and let the ice melt in the freezer overnight with the door open. Then try it the next day, if is cooling fine then you need to have a service person replace one of the above items.

Re: Magic Chef

If the compressor is running but the fridge is not cooling, the gas may have leaked out of the system or the compressor is inefficient. The only way to know for sure is to connect a set of gauges to the system. You will need to call in a Refrigeration Mechanic.
