Question about Hayward Viper Pool Cleaner

Open Question

I have a Hayward Viper (Model 5500 bought in early 2004). Last year I had a problem where it would keep spinning in circles (stuck in "turnout" mode). I found the check valve was cracked so I replaced it; problem solved. This year, after running normally for awhile, it will get stuck in "turnout" mode, just spinning in circles like it did last year. I took a look at the check valve, but I can't see anything wrong with it. I opened up the manifold and cleaned it out thinking perhaps that it was getting stuck in the "turnout" position, but that didn't seem to help. I checked the cam gearbox, no problem there (the cam is turning normally). I thought I might just go ahead and replace the manifold (part #AX5500MA) and check valve ( part #AX5000CVA), but I've discovered that Hayward changed the manifold design in mid 2004, and according to at least one website, the new manifold (part #AX5500MA3V) won't work in my earlier Viper model. Any ideas what might be causing the problem? Any help/guidance is greatly appreciated.

SOURCE: Hayward Viper 5500 is spinning in circles

We found the problem to be a faulty check valve. the check valve cost about 25.00. I ordered it from poolcenter.com. The check valve is located by the cam. It's an easy fix. The check valve comes with the hose attachment, but since our hose was ok we just used a tie strap to connect the new check valve to the hose...sliped back into place... and it works like a charm once again. The part number is below. go to www.poolcenter.com

SOURCE: Control Valve handle wont stay in position

The valve should be about $100. We sell it for 90 something. You can rebuild them with gaskets and the spring. There should be a model number on yours, care to post it? Something like SP711, SP714, etc.

If there is air in the pump it cavitates and can make it run louder, otherwise it is the bearings in the motor.

SOURCE: Hayward Viper will no longer turn around once stuck.

The spin-out Cam,you should have got 3 with your viper, are located on the top from front rignt side. You have to remove the top and then you see a small red flywheel thing. There is a white ball in the back where the pressure comes in. I ran a garden hose in and cleaned pressing gently on the ball. Worked for me good luck wuwei

SOURCE: the viper is going in circles

I had a similiar problem. I took the sweep motor apart and used a scotch brite pad and smooted the inside of the piston that operates the spinout. I also lubed the o-ring seals with some vaseline before putting it back together. I also used the scotch brite pad on the little plastic part and its mating surface the piston operates.

My viper just started spinning in a continuous circle wrapping the hose completely around the cleaner and the bag. It's not a hose problem. It was working OK one day and started this the next.

That sounds wild. I would call the Hayward technical service number at 908-355-7995 and maybe they can figure this out. I hope this helps.

VIPER 5500 SPINS AROUND IN CIRCLES CAUSING HOSE TO GET TANGLED. ANY SUGGESTIONS WHY?

There are a couple of things that you should try if this pool cleaners hose is frequently becoming tangled. Make sure that your floats are evenly and correctly spaced. One float should be 18" inches from each end and a third float located in the middle, 5 feet from either end. You should also make sure that the hose length is not too long for your pool size. Your spin out might be too high. Try moving it to a lower setting and then running the cleaner again.

Cleaner just spins

If the cleaner is spinning in circles, it a probably a problem with the hoses of these pool cleaners. It was was a common problem with early models, and they have just redesigned it. Lay the hose out in the sun, stretched out, and let it sit for several hours to straighten out the hose. Make sure that you are not storing the hose in a coiled position since they are prone to bend and break.
