We have a Canon Image Class MF5900. When we put items through the feeder on the top of the machine to feed through for either copying or scanning we get the copies/scans but they also have line through...

Yes, this machine has what the call a scanning glass. Its the small thin glass where the paper goes down through the doc feed.its on this glass. A real close visual or take a clean piece of paper. Wad it up a and clean glass with that paper. It works. But if you don't have a line when you print or from the platin.(glass,main).its on that reader glass.

Tip

Get rid of the line in your faxes or copies from your copy machine

If you are getting one of those black lines in your copies from the copy machine/fax machine, it may not need a new drum.

Most likely the scanning glass is dirty if the line appears from copies that are fed through a feeder, clean the little glass strip area (usually to the left) just before the scanning area where you manually place a paper to be copied. In most cases there is a spec of something on that glass. Don't scrap it with anything abrasive because if you scratch the glass you will have a line that will never go away. In most cases a damp klenex, paper towel or soft cloth with water will work. For stubborn specs dampen your klenex, paper towel or cloth with a little rubbing alcohol. This will also work well for getting rid of any greasy smudges on the glass strip and the larger glass area on the copy machine. Most of the thime the spec is from liquid paper or white out.

If you are getting calls from people you send faxes to saying your copies have a line on it and you use a dedicated 'fax machine only', look for the glass strip and clean it as directed above. If you are receiving faxes with a line, call the sender and give them the above tip.

If this tip works, it sure beats paying for a new drum you don't need.

I have a brother 770 fax. When making copies or sending faxes the paper has long black narrow lines running from the top to bottom. Please help.

Hi There!
One reason why you're having a black line on the copies you make and faxes that you send it's because the scanner glass inside the fax machine is dirty. Here's what you can do to resolve you're issue.
-Make sure the printer is off and unplugged from the power outlet for your safety. -Open the control panel, Prepare a dry lint free cloth and isopropyl alcohol, dampen the cloth with a small amount of alcohol. -Inside the fax machine look for a the long scanner glass clean it with the dampened cloth, using hand try to feel if there are debris or dirt and concentrate on cleaning that part. -Directly above the glass you will see a white strip clean that also with the dampened cloth
Once you're done cleaning, close the cover and plug it back in. Try to copy a blank sheet of paper and if you can still see the same line clean it again for about 3-5 times, Make sure to make a copy everytime you clean the glass.
Hope this helps!

A vertical black line appear on each paper when the document feeder is used to make copies; such vertical line does not appear on papers when copying on the glass surface. How do I resolve this...?

Hello,
when you open the copier platen cover, left of the copy glass, there is small narrow glass, which is used when you make copies from ADF. Over that glass is plastic protective sheet. Remove it and clean, also clean the glass. Use glass detergent and after cleaning dry it!

Even the smallest dirt can cause lines!

Hope that helps!

Black line in paper

On what operation are you receiving the black line in your paper?

This problem usually appears when you try to scan or copy using your ADF (automatic document feeder).
To remove this black line in your paper, clean the ADF platen glass in your printer and do as well in the flatbed scanner glass. This ADF platen glass can be found right below where the documents in the ADF goes through. Its a glass about 1 inch in with and beside the flatbed scanner glass (the one where your documents is lay down for copying and scanning. Dried ink or paper residue sticked in the glass can cause this line in the paper. Clean it with a a clothe and spray some windex on it.

Good luck!

When using the top loader to make copies, the copies come out with a line down the whole sheet?

I fixing is verry simple.Open the top cover of the copier(where you are putting the paper you want to copy). There should be two glasses(One big and one smaller wich is under the top loader). You need to clean the little glass from any dirt.Even a small peace of dirt can make a whole line on the paper, beacuse the scanner is not moving, but the paper is.So clean the little glass(wich is next to the big one and the line will be gona.replay if you need any futher help. Please vote if that was helpfull!!

Copies leaves lines when put through the feeder, but not on the glass .......have cleaned and sprayed air can everywhere I can think of The Hp Printer is HP 3055 All in One printer

Most likely a fax has been sent or a page copied with 'white out' (Liquid Paper), still wet on the page. As the page feeds over the scanner, (a narrow strip of glass that runs across the width of the page along the feed path) the wet liquid paper comes off on the glass as a thin line and dries. Thereafter, when copying, scanning or sending a fax, the scanner light does not go through the liquid paper streak and the result when printed is a thin vertical line that runs the full length of the page.

If this is your problem: follow the path that the paper travels when sending a fax or making a copy, until you find the scanner (narrow glass strip). Take a clean, soft cloth and a small amount of methylated spirit (or white spirit) and remove the now dried Liquid Paper from the glass. Clean the whole strip ensuring that the glass is left clean and dry.

Unwanted verticle line on fax copies

Most likely a fax has been sent or a page copied with 'white out' (Liquid Paper), still wet on the page. As the page feeds over the scanner, (a narrow strip of glass that runs across the width of the page along the feed path) the wet liquid paper comes off on the glass as a thin line and dries. Thereafter, when copying, scanning or sending a fax, the scanner light does not go through the liquid paper streak and the result when printed is a thin vertical line that runs the full length of the page. If this is the cause you will also find that faxes you send to other people will also have this line (although faxes you receive are not affected by this problem with your machine).

To fix the problem: follow the path that the paper travels when sending a fax or making a copy, until you find the scanner (narrow glass strip). Take a clean, soft cloth and a small amount of methylated spirit (or white spirit) and remove the now dried Liquid Paper from the glass. Clean the whole strip ensuring that the glass is left clean and dry.

The small scanner glass (not the full size glass) has some dirt on it. Use a lint-free cloth (not paper) with alcohol or Windex and clean the glass. This should help.
