Question about Heating & Cooling

Open Question

Hi, I have an outside central air condition condensor/blower or fan box that isnt running. I noticed after 24 hours my house temperature was around 80 degrees and the air condition was on all day, or atleast I thought it was. Air is coming out but its not cold. The problem seems to be the outside unit. It is a carrier model 38BR036300. I went outside and on the side of my house next to the unit is a small metal breaker box with one on/off switch. When i turned it off and on again the unit sounded as if it was going to start or did start but shut right back off again. It did this a few times. Does anyone have any advice on what the problem may be? I noticed that there is another box connected to the outside of my house directly next to the unit. The are obviously connected. This box has a small lock on it, some plastic piece and the box says BGE which is Baltimore Gas and Electric. Could it be a broken fuse and is that fuse inside that BGE box? Thanks for taking the time to read this. Any help is highly aprecciated. Sorry for the bad grammar and spelling.

SOURCE: ac fan on, blowing air, but not cold

Check outside unit if unit and compressor are running feel the large line to see if it is cold. If compressor is running and line is not cold possible charge problems. You may have a capacitor problem outside. they go out quite often. You can change this yourself, Open up outside unit and the cap is the silver bullet with terminals out the top. Bad cap can cause compressor to not operate and also the fan. You need to clean the coil inside or at leat check the coil to see if it is clean. You can clean theis with a toilet brush do not go against the coil bit brush with the fins. You may need to call a service tech but try these options first. russ

sounds like you need to check your run cap it is silver in the outside unit and it runs the compressor and fan motor. Check on the capacitor what size it is and replace it for example 45+5 uf.

Goodman central air conditioning. Little air is coming from the vents in the house and the air that is coming out isnt very cold

have the central unit blower/fan cleaned as they block up from dust and other particles so that they eventually look like logs and do not move air like they should. Have the unit gas pressure tested for correct amount of gas

Does my unit have a blower inside the house as well as outside or just inside? please explain remote display symbols

Hello
Yes there is a blower fan located in the unit in the home. What this doeas is moves the air out to the vents in the floors or walls.
Also there is a fan outside. This is used for air conditioning. What this fan does is keeps the condensor cool by disapating heat away.

Due to the many different questions I see about Air Conditioning, I am including this overview to help us better understand each other for trouble shooting. A basic air conditioning system has a Thermostat, Air Handler or Furnace Fan and a Condensing unit. In a split system, the condensing unit (Condenser) is separate from the furnace and usually in the back yard. When working properly, it blows hot air. It connects to the cooling part of the system by 2 copper lines. One large line and 1 small line. The part that cools the house is the "Evaporator" and is usually on top of the furnace inside the square metal box (Plenum). When the Air Conditioner is running, the large copper line should be cold and the smaller line should be warm. Common signs of low refrigerant are that both lines are the same temperature and/or frost or ice has built up on the large line at the condenser. The thermostat will normally display room temperature on till it is touched to change the setting. It could have a "Span" setting as well as times and temperatures. The operating "span" of MOST residential thermostats is 40 to 90 degrees. That means you can set it as low as 40 degrees and no higher than 90 degrees. It probably has a fan switch also. When in the "ON" position, the fan will run constantly, 24 / 7, but the condenser will still cycle on and off as needed to keep the house at set point. If you have a suggestion to include in this paragraph, please let me know.

I think I have it covered above. Let me know if you need something more specific. Thank you. Roger

My air conditioner fan is not working

Check the outside fan and make sure it rotates freely. If it doesn't spin freely it needs to be replaced. If it does spin freely then check the capacitor. If the capactitor is OK the check the fan motor windings for continuity with an ohmmeter. Let me know what you find.

I live in Texas, also. Is the house air conditioned? If the air outside of the box is hot, it will draw the cool air out. Heat is the number one enemy to Cold. There is heat in everything. Sometimes, the insulation, surrounding the box, will breakdown. The time the box is off, could be, while it is in defrost? If you can afford it, purchase a new box. Technology has come a long way in eleven years. Good luck.

Fan isnt running

If the fan on the condensor isnt working but yo still hear the compressor going you might have a bad fan motor. or the coil pack is bad. its a cylynder shape part which should be located by all the relays in the condencing unt outside. Generally easy to get to, make sure the power is shut down before opening the casing. Them pack do go bad do to weather factors. If it rusty and you can shake it and it sounds like theres water in it, then its bad. The pack usually has 3-4 wire connected to it, Remember the order of them for installation. This part runs from anywhere to 20 to 30 dollars on norm at grainger. I replaced mine last year and it worked once then the fan quit. They said the coil pack probably shorted the fan. 65 dollors there. After put back together, runs like new, and i did it my self, with just a little knowledge of HVAC,, Good luck, But first thing to do is make sure your breakers are on, ive seen that a couple times, lol

Blower fan keeps shutting on/off,

Your blower fan turning on and off shows your thermostat is working. I am willing to bet you have the fan in the automatic condition. Check for a sticking contactor at the outside unit.
