Question about RCA DRC8335

RCA DRC8335: shows "padlock" symbol

We have had the vcr/dvd combo for a while. It recently locked up as if someone did a combination code or something and "locked" it. It does the "HELLO" message, then says "READING", then finally the "NO DISK" display. But it will not accept any input on the remote or console except for the power button. It shows a "padlock" symbol. I have lost the manual so..... no luck there. Any help would be nice. Thanks

I've had problems with this model locking up but unplugging usually reset everything although it seemed to be happening more and more frequently and I've had to update the date/time whenever this happened. Now I get 'HELLO' running across non-stop no matter what I do. Any assistance with this will be greatly appreciated.

I am having the same issue. I play my DVD-R's, and they may play fine, but other times it causes the system to lock up. So I have reset by unplugging it all the time. It happens around 95& of the time i play DVD-R's, and sometimes DVD+R's.

Mark. Use the emergency factory-set master password 9688 to cancel and remove any previously owner set parental control password. Refer to page 26 of the User Manual if needed.

Apparently it never crossed the RCA programming engineer's mind to make the emergency master password 8335 which would've been far more intuitive and easier to remember, in an emergency! Some people were born without any imagination whatsoever. Most of those become programmers apparently. (I'm allowed to say that as I happen to be one by profession :o).

Here's the link for the above manual again. Sorry, but it didn't process correctly above for whatever reason. Too bad Fixya doesn't presently provide us a way to edit our previous submissions!

The loading basket is defective, or the loading gears are out of alignment. Check for broken gears, belts, and a twisted basket after removing the top cover. If speed is an issue you may need to take it to a technician to see if it can be salvaged.

I see RCA no longer has any manuals for that unit. But, is this the exact model number? I mean like I have an RCA DRC8335 VCR/DVD recorder, so I am wondering if it is similar? If so I could work out something for you. Email me at if you think I can help with my manual.

RCA DRC8300N DVD Recorder / VCR Combo manual

Gary. The DRC8335 User Manual is no longer available on Thompson's official support site. But fortunately a few of us downloaded it a year or more ago before it was pulled!

I tried uploading the manual to Fixya several times including just a short while ago. It seemed to upload successfully, but after performing a Fixya search it's still nowhere to be found, just like many others I've uploaded in the past.

But don't worry! You can download it NOW from my personal User and Service Manual archive on OwnerIQ using the hotlink below.

OwnerIQ encrypts all filenames within our personal folders for security purposes which ends-up making them rather unreadable. For this reason, please rename it back to my original filename appearing in blue in the hotlink just below when the download completes

Respectfully, Mike Adams

VCR won't accept tapes

VHS VCRs are not being produced in very large quantities any more. You may still be able to find a combo unit DVD/VCR.

The problem may be a belt or gear, or it may be that the tray is damaged. Only a tech can tell you, but there's little point in repairing these. I know Wal-Mart still sells them...

Can i hookup extrnal speakers to my hi-fi vcr-dvd recorder without a tuner or a reciver, my model # drc8335. Think you.

I do not think so because the first problem is that the VCR recorder uses RCA audio cables (the White and Red colored cables) but the speakers use regular speaker wire. You cant convert from RCA to regular speaker wire. Second problem is even if you find a way to convert the wires, the DVD recorder does not amplify the sound signal. In fact all DVD players and recorders including VCR combos do NOT amplify the audio signal so you will barely hear it. The receiver does two jobs. First it converts from RCA cable to speaker cable and Second it also amplifies the signal before it sends it out to a speaker. Thats why a receiver is important.
