Question about Craftsman 26 hp 54 in. Deck Deluxe Yard Tractor - CA Model

2 Answers

I've been having problems starting. (Slow turnover) Finally would not crank and assumed it was the battery. Got a new battery and still will not crank, not even spin. Blade switch is off and I checked the clutch swith making sure it was being depressed when clutch engaged. I read where there's a fuse that might be the problem, but I can't locate it. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Eric

A fuse would not prevent the engine from spinning, good or bad. What would prevent it though, is a compression build-up inside the cylinder(s) of the engine. These engines have overhead valves. These engines also have a built-in compression release feature that is activated at low (when starting) engine speed and cancels when the engine starts running. It works off of the camshaft and allows the intake valve to open ever so slightly on the compression stroke so as not to overburden the starter. Remove the valve cover(s) and adjust those overhead valves. It is not hard. Here is how it is done.

Read the section (pictures are included) that says "Adjusting Overhead Valves".

Is it the battery?,Thank you.

I assume you're probably asking if your vehicles battery needs to be replaced? If the vehicle is slow starting, or does not start or turnover then yes your battery needs to be replaced

1999 ford explorer wont start. battery is new.wont start when jumped. it tries to turn over but barely. then only hear a click. when you turn the key the dash lights and radio lights flicker on an

Sounds like starter motor given your slow to no turnover, I assume your new battery has full charge, if not, check with meter, it may be a defective battery, or another issue with connections, did you clean cable connections when you put in new battery? I assume your engine was running properly before battery change and is not partially seized due to overheating or low oil.

Good luck,

Fuel relay

Short answer, your batter is bad. or is disCHARGED:
Long.:

wont crank?
no engine, cranks ,unless the starting system works.
unless pushed fast, like my car or i park on a hill and coast jump my car.(M/T tranny rule)

NO crank, is the true failure here:
slow Cranks are , bad battery , or a discharged battery , due to bad charging system or parked for 3 months or longer.

so ill assume its NO CRANK.
I turn the key TO START and the starter fails to CRANK.
the starter motor is dead. (key clue 1)
so i attach a set of jumper cables to my Caddy, running and this car
now cranks and RUNS (you left that out. above, huh? runs)

turnsover means nothing, because the engine starter turns over
and the engine can turn over and the engine can run,
once running the EFI system SUSTAINS runninng.
so there are 4 states there. (4 phases )

No cranks #1 reason to be slow , are a bad battery
so I charge that battery, and see how if it cranks , now?
it dont crank means a bad battery
it does work( crank) see how long it works.../?
if it dies again, or better, check the cars Alternator for by measuring
accross the battery terminals running , with any volt meter.
13.3 to 15vdc is a good alternator running the engine.
if NOT, the charge system is bad. (system)

On some cars the IMMO can block Cranking or for sure blocks
fueling after 2 seconds. So. watch the IMMO light on the dash.
Immo is the Immoblizer. option.

My 2002 nissan sentra will crank but won't start. i've replace the ecm/ecu, the cam/crank sensor or position, checked the fuel pump/pressure, and it still is doing the same thing. sometimes it

I assume you checked the fuel pressure and it is normal.
Are the spark plugs getting spark when it fails to start ?
Are you getting injector pulse from the computer ?
Any trouble codes stored in the computer ?

Have you run the codes? I'd be checking the MAP sensor, usually on the firewall and check the vacuum line going to it. Matter of fact, check ALL vacuum lines as they got really brittle at connectors and a break is hard to find. I used to own a nice 88 Marquis.Great cars! don-ohio (:^)

My 2005 nissan altima won't crank or turnover. It justs makes this clicking noise. Can you help me?

The click is most likely the starter solenoid you hear

Should be a familiar sound you've heard may times
on other cars

I would guess you know how old the battery is?

If it is original,it is 8 years old & dead,if so, replace it

If it is only 3 years old ,check the voltage with a meter

Next the solenoid could be working as you hear it,but
it's contacts are burnt,it can be replaced

You remove the starter & change the solenoid

Don't want to do that, buy the entire starter at auto parts,
not a dealer, cost too much to even be there for any reason.

Car slow to start in the morning, will start after

If it is cranking intermittently then there are lots of items to check. First is your battery in good health? Five years old is old in car life for batteries. Does it have the correct battery? Is the water in the battery at a correct level? Are the connections very clean and tight. Does the engine block have a strong ground connection. Is your starter OK? Starting relay good?
I once had a Camry that gave me fits with intermittent starting. I attached an indicator light in the cab, that was connected directly to the starter solenoid. When you turn the key the light would come on. Finally one time when it did not start but the light was ON then the problem was in the starter! It was in the soleniod, bad, charred connections. Intermittent problem are the worst! Good luck.

My jeep has a slow turnover when it is cranked it didnt star untill this cold weather

Could be the starter but most likely the battery is the problem. You can confirm the problem by boosting the vehicle,if it starts normally replace the starter if not replace the battery.
