First of all, I hope there was no injury or property damage!

Second, be sure to unplug the oven until it is repaired or replaced.

Your owner's manual will give you details of your warranty.

If for some reason you don't have yours, you can download Whirlpool owner's manuals and installation instructions here.

If there was property damage or injury, you would be entitled to compensation and should preserve the microwave "as-is" for evidence.

Then I would advise you not to discuss the situation with anyone other than a consultant or legal representative.

In addition to repairing microwaves and their controllers, I provide expert technical witness and consulting services for attorneys in cases like this, and I would be happy to work with your attorneys to analyze this or give a deposition, etc., if you decide to assert your rights to compensation. Let me know if I can help you further.

Typically they do not charge you unless you receive a settlement or award.

We're happy to help you with free advice and we'd appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

Just installed a new unit and when i pluged in something is running and the light stays on in the cooking area. will not shut off by the way it is not the fan running and it is not heating up

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly.

If you are sure that you have your electrical connections correct, that the exhaust fan is not running and this is a NEW unit you need to go to this link and first Register your microwave:
https://www.geappliances.com/service_and_support/register
You have a product warranty claim and should not attempt any repairs. You will void your warranty if you do anything else.
After Registration making sure you state it is a warranty repair you should schedule warranty service here:
GE Warranty Management (1-800-626-2224
Monday - Friday: 8 a.m. - 8 p.m. ET
Saturday: 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. ET

My from the hip thoughts are that there is a control board, or relay problem in your microwave. It could be several things including a loose wire... but at this point your stuck in the warranty repair routine. Anything I would tell you to do today would void your warranty.

If you need more assistance just respond here and I will help you.
Thanks for choosing FixYa,
Kelly

After cleaning, the microwave worked but

I am still working on the problem. So far the exhaust fan, the light , the clock and light inside the heating chamber has started working. I am going to sit back and think and look for the part that shorted out. Since the unit is 29 years old the bad part may not even be available. I will keep you advised after I find the culprit part. The information may be beneficial to others. Thanks

Microwave caught on fire.

I agree! That is an extreme hazard. Possibly due to over voltage of the power supply or faulty relay systems. Emerson is usually a cheaper brand anyhow. I would get the money back instead of exchange.

Potato caught fire during cooking. Microwave has

Hello, inside most microwaves, there is a thermal fuse, that if something in the cooking cavity is on fire, it will melt the thermal fuse, if it gets hot enough, thus breaking the power to the unit shutting it off. This sounds like what has happened to yours, simply replacing it will correct the problem. It is usually located near a cavity exhaust point. If you aren't comfortable doing this, as it requires removing the outer cover, while unplugged, and locating/replacing it, take it to a appliance service co. This will of course cost more, if you do it yourself, make sure you provide all of your make/model/serial/anything else, that will identify your unit, and call/go online to a parts retailer, and you should be able to get it done fairly cheap.

Hope this helps, and thank you.

Decor DMO2420 Microwave caught on fire

Please write back with more details if this reply doesn't solve it.

(Such as, Was the fire inside the cooking cavity? Has the inside been cleaned since?)

There is a cavity temperature fuse located under the outer cover, on the top left side of the cooking cavity. It is rated at 150 degrees centigrade.

If there is a fire, that will open, killing all power to the unit.

A replacement can be found at a local appliance parts company.

The tube would be that magnetron tube, and it is a part separate from the exhaust fan.

First of all, you should check your manual, since the magnetron may still be under warranty. You can download the manual here:

http://www.geappliances.com/service_and_support/literature/

If not, and you or a friend plan to try to repair it, we have *critical* safety, disassembly, and troubleshooting info at our site. You'll find a link to our site in our listing here on FixYa: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk

There should also be a very helpful "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel. It's very helpful when troubleshooting.

You can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here: http://tinyurl.com/gv383
