I have a Whirlpool GD5RHAXS with ice maker. The ice maker fills up with water, freezes but the plastic fingers that should slowly rotate and push the ice out are not slowly rotating anymore. Recently I would give it a tap, shake or wiggle the plastic fingers and sometimes it would work again for a few times. But now it is stopped for good. Infrared sensor seems to be working and blinking as it should be. I have removed the ice maker (ice is thawing) and plan to open up the side of the motor unit to see if there is anything broken in there or something... maybe teeth to a gear (though I hear no rattling). What do you think? Is the motor just shot and I need to replace it or is there something to fix? Please contact me via email.

SOURCE: Whirlpool Side by Side Ice Maker Not Making Ice

If you have the type of ice maker that has an ice bin on the freezer door, then there are instructions available at www.AnyoneCanFixIt.com to fix the ice maker problem. They also sell the part that is sometimes required to repair this common problem on the ice maker. The problem is notorious on these refrigerators that were made around 2004 and later. The ice maker will usually go out within 1-2 years. They have redesigned a part to eliminate the problem.

Ice maker exploded view is on page 19, and parts are listed on page 2 of the parts manual. I agree, the care and use guide to be useless.

SOURCE: whirlpool side by side GS5SHAXN. Ice maker slowly died.

Hi agcruiser;
Have your change your water filter lately?
If not try that, as it may be starting to block up a little.
Another problem could be the water inlet valve(Ice Side) situated at bottom of fridge, that could be starting to wear (Can interchange with water side inlet valve). Yes there are 2- 1 for ice and 1 for water
The Whirlpools Ice Michine set up is very easy, and runs by a mechanical system, they can be tested (Use a qualified tech).
Cheers hope this helps

My ice maker is not working on my gs5 sha side by side refrigerator freezer, it is spraying water everywhere inside the freezer, any help?

Make sure the water is coming from the ice maker by using additional light to spot the source of the leak then you possibly have a defective water fill valve leaking water slowly and causing water to freeze where water exits the tube into the ice maker. Once there is ice there and the ice maker calls for water the water either spews all over everything or is blocked from filling the ice maker cube slots altogether. Dumping ice

If heater element is open the newly made cubes will stick to the tray and not be pushed out by the fingers doing the ejecting.

Whirlpool ED5VHEXVQ03 side by side. Ice maker is not making ice. Checked water line - okay. Checked water valve - okay. Water filling tray - okay.

Whirlpool Ice Makers are about the hardest working part on your refrigerator and their average life is about five years. You can fill the tray with tap water if the ice slots are already empty and let the water freeze. If after the water freezes and the ice drops to ice bin then the water control valve.

Click Here=> 4389177 Water Inlet Valve will need replaced. You mentioned the water is filling the tray OK then my focus would be on the ice maker.

The ice maker does not make ice anymore checked the arm was in correct position

Hello, well i would check the water line that actually fills the ice cube tray, many times these can freeze up and not allow any water into the tray. Second i would check to see if it is actually cycling, This can be done by pushing in the door switch and see if the little fingers in the tray are rotating. good luck

Ice maker is not working

1. Check that Bailer Arm is DOWN
2. Put finger up in Ice Maker Mold and check to see if there is Water Filled in the Ice Cavity (just where the ice is pushed up and out of the Ice Maker Mold)
3. If no water.... Take about 4 screws off Ice Maker and take out, careful to not tear rubber hose in back in Freezing Compartment.
4. Defrost the Ice Maker and reinstall
5. Make sure the Bailer Arm is Down
6. Listen and be sure the water is filling the Ice Maker
7. Allow it time to freeze and dump the load

If that does not do it... Contact me again for the next step.

Hope that helps...

Kindly,

Jim

Whirlpool icemaker. fingers constantly spin , no water

Turn the bale up on the IM head, to shut it off. sounds like the thermostat in the IM head is bad, or maybe the water valve. If you put water in the tray on the head and the fingers kept going I would suspect the head thermostat. change the IM head

Ice maker doesn't work!

Could be the sensor for the ice maker to fill up....we have a wire bar that flips up when full so it shuts off ....also a piece of ice gets stuck in the plastic fingers somtimes but since you defrosted it that shouldn't be the problem....not sure if you can take the ice maker out yourself ...better call the repair man ...

2003 whirlpool ice maker doesn't work

May be an issue with the cam that operates the ice maker. U can pick up a new ice maker for about 40 bucks on ebay.

Lots of things could be bogus. If the solenoid does not open, no water in tray - no ice. If tray does not get warm for fingers, fingers cannot push ice out - no ice. If freezer is not at least 10 degrees, no ice making at all. If cam motor for maker is bogus, anything could be out of whack.

Make sure that the ice maker is in "on" mode.

Inoperative Ice Maker

The icemaker stops working because excessive water gets into the control box(where circuit board is housed) through the shaft hole of "finger" and freezes the wheels to turn the "ice-bucket-full detector rod". This stops to send the signal to open water valve.
To fix, remove the icemaker from the wall (need remove two screws - make sure power switch is OFF) and carefully separate the snap-on cable (retangular shape) and a ground cable on the bottom side of the icemaker. (Now you can remove the icemaker out of the refrigerator).
You can open the contol box (need unscrew one and carefully prop it open using a screw driver or a knife. You can unplug color corded snap-on cables for easiness to work (very simple).
You will see ice formed around the plastic gear wheel controlling the "ice-bucket-full detector rod". Remove all ice and dry all the parts in the box and put them back. Make sure all the cable are back to the matching color receptable(only fits in the right place). Connect the cable(rectangular shape) and connect the ground cable. Mount the incemaker on the wall using two screws you removed at first.
Turn the power ON and reset the system by press down the ice cube size selector until the "fingers" make a full cycle. You will see the metal rod moves up and down as system resets. During this cycle the water will be filled into the icemaker.
I believe this icemaker has a design flaw but it's very simple to correct the problem you are experiencing. You do not need much electronic or mechanical knowlege to fix this.
Best wishes
