Question about Dyson DC17 Animal Bagless Upright Cyclonic Vacuum
More than likely your roller brush drive belt is damaged. If you remove the belt and look at it you will probably see a bald spot on the inside circumference where it is missing some teeth. Your belt drive gear is probably spinning and squealing each time it hits this bald spot on the belt.
To access the drive belt unplug the unit, then just rotate the flathead screws on the bottom plate counterclockwise until they disengage and then gently pry off the base plate. Use a screwdriver slide the inner part of the belt off the drive gear and then the whole roller assembly and belt should come right out.
Just contact Dyson and have them send you a replacement belt for free and then just reinstall it yourself.
