Question about Toshiba MK2035GSS 200 GB SATA Hard Drive

1 Answer

Toshiba (MK2035GSS) 200Gb Hard Drive with Vista 64 OS crashed in my laptop. Drive had 2 partitions of equal size (around 97GB each). I attempted to reformat the hard drive to reinstall the operating system, and i receive error messages can not format hard drive. I removed the hard drive and placed it in a removable case to connect to a separate computer (XP Pro) via USB. The drive is recognized (both partitions) but neither can be formatted. I used the Disk Management utility from XP to delete the partitions and create one logical partition. I was successful, now i have a 186.31 GB hard drive (sounds like a lot of bad sectors). I have tried several options to format (quick, NTFS, FAT) to no avail. I wanted to run a check disk, but that application does not start.

Boot computer with windows disk then delete the partition of that harddrive 5 to 6 times format it then you can install windows on it. Also after booting with windows disk enter in recovery console mode then type below command "chkdsk /r" without "" then press "y' then it will fix and recover errors on harddrive. Let me know if you need further assistance. Thanks for using FixYa.

Toshiba tablet R15-S829 has only c drive .can i do partition in this hard drive. is it accptable for this laptop or not.please help

I think the problem is only that your system crashed. So you can try some data recovery software to recover the wanted data from system partition and then reinstall OS,
I suggest you can use a free data backup software to create a recover disc once you enconter such a problem you can recover your data and system easily.

I can't find out how to make a recovery disc. Running Vista OS.

If your laptop still has the recovery partition on drive "E" press F8 just before the laptop starts to boot, just as the Toshiba screen dissapears. That will give you the menu option to choose Recover.
Choose recover and follow the prompts.
If the partition is damaged or missing, it cannot be done from the hard drive and the purchase of a Vista system disc will be required.

How do I setup a dual boot for a PC with Vista and XP? I want XP to start automatically. My laptop is a Toshiba Satellite L355-S7915 that had Vista Home Basic preinstalled.

The first thing you need to do is repartition the hard drive. This will effectively erase the drive because partitions run below the OS level.

You create two partitions and then you can load each OS to its own partition. When the box boots you choose the OS you want to start and thats it...I think if you put the preferred OS in the first partition it will load that one by default.

You need both OS disks to do this so make sure your factory Vista disk works.

Hard drive crashed

Since the laptop is no longer even listed on the Toshiba site, you probably need a 2.5" IDE hard drive. You should be able to take it in to any reputable computer/electronics shop and they can tell you positively if it is an IDE device or not (I'd put money that it is). You should be able to use anything up to about 200GB. Anything bigger than that is dicey based on the age of the laptop (the built-in controller may not support drives larger than 200GB). And your recovery disk should not have a problem with using the larger drive although you may need to partition it yourself before running the restore disk since some of them hard-coded the partition information (which would give you a 30GB partition and the rest unused space which you could then use for a second partition with a separate drive letter than the rest of the drive)..

I take it you see the hard drive when you boot to vista cd. doing install can you remove partition and then create new partition format and install vista software. have you tried that if so sounds like your hard drive is working and can delete and reset drive partition index. if your crashing in post then you need to push the tab key when toshiba logo appears should switch showing post BIOS boot on screen all text you should try pressing the setup key as soon as you see the num loc light blink on your keyboard the driver is loaded press f2 then tab key to check post boot.
please let me if this helped you.
