I have 2 IBM T40 ThinkPads, both having the same issues. Certainly seems like a loose connection. If I hold the laptop with 2 hands grasping the lower lefthand corner just after powering up, it will start up normally but don't bump it or move it or it will go out. I have opened up both and checked keyboard connections, mouse touch pad connections and hard drive connection. All are good. Next step, it must be some other loose connection on the mother board or in the area of the lower lefthand corner of the laptop. I was hoping to find a solution without breaking them down any further but it looks like I may have no other choice.

Mine did the same up until the point where it quit working unless you press the spot where the hard drive plugs into the motherboard in between your fingers like vice grips and it has become useless.Has anyone found a solution to this problem?

This is going to be a connection that has worked loose. You will need to check all connections to the motherboard. Start with the hard drive.

I have an ibm think pad t40 and after turning on it shows a lock symbol what can i do to get passed that

Hi stbnwyearjob..

Your T-40 computer is waiting for a password.
That screen with the lock symbol is the startup password screen.
You will enable or disable this password in the BIOS of the computer.
You will need to know what that password is to disable it.
If you do not know the password then:
You can also try to remove the cmos battery for a few minutes and then replace it that may clear the bios password.
Please take time to rate me

If you are unable to boot into safe mode by tapping F8 during the IBM splash screen then you will need a windows Install disc to boot off of and fix your boot command. If you don't have a disc then try to borrow a friends, you need to boot off that disc do that you can get to the recovery console and fix your boot menu.

Most likely its the LCD cable from motherboard to the screen. This can get damaged especially in the hinge area and can prevent the laptop from turning on and the other problems you mention. Replacing the LCD cable should solve all your problems.

Blank Screen

First, confirm that it is the screen itself. Connect the video output to a known working monitor and then power on your Thinkpad. if the known working monitor behaves the same way you can rule out the laptop's monitor as the source of the problem. This may be the BGA, Ball Grid Assembly, leadless soldering problem related to video chips on the motherboard, but first test the monitors.

IBM T40 Laptop screen goes black, will not come back

First of all, you have to check whether you can see video signal with surrounding light tilting the screen.
If you can see dim image, all you have to do is replace back-light inverter or fix it. Usually, the fuse is open and you can connect it by simple soldering.
If you can't see dim image, it is another problems.
Give it a try.

IBM Thinkpad T40 Problem Booting Up

I have a T41 doing this, and pressing on the big ATI video chip (under the wireless card, under the touchpad) would change the machine's mood from bad to good (or vice versa). There are sites saying motherboard flex is the problem, and the solder balls of the video chip (GPU) are the weak link. There is a service on ebay the repairs the solder balls of ATI GPUs for $50, which I will be trying out. Or check Youtube for how to reflow the solder yourself with a 1500 watt heater and an infrared thermometer.

emove the CMOS battery, POP will be vanished right away. But after that, you have to enter BIOS to set the time/date, otherwise laptop won't boot.
