SOURCE: Canon MP500 Printing Problem
I had same problem today. Removed print head and bathed it in alcohol for half an hour. Then I removed the two screws underneath and used a syringe to squirt alcohol into the ports and clean. I noticed clumps of ink coming out (i guess some ports were blocked). I then dried the head and reinserted and reinstalled ink tanks. All looks good so far- black printing again and printed test patterns all look correct. Good luck.

SOURCE: smeared lines
Okay, this was the problem I posted a few days ago. It's fixed now, so in case you have the same problem with smearing, here's what the help desk from Canon suggested: Open the cover and remove the ink cartridges. There is a gray lever in front of the cartridges. Lift this lever and the printhead can be easily removed.
Our printhead had a buildup of black ink on the surface. I carefully removed this with rubbing alcohol. I let the printhead dry and replaced everything. No more smearing. Imagine a help-desk that actually helped!

I replaced the Office Max ink substitute with an original Canon ink. This did not help. I decided this problem most probably had to be a printer head issue, so I gave up and bought a new printer instead.

Apparently, if you hold the "resume button" (the one next to the power button) for about five seconds after you get the message saying to replace the color ink cartridge the machine starts printing. I did this after I went to "maintenance" under "preferences" and changed ink to "black only." At first that alone did not work, but after trying the resume button for 5 secs it worked okay.
