SOURCE: won't read disc
The laser lens in your CD might be dirty or failing. Try the following solutions: Clean the laser lens with a DVD player lense cleaning disc. Lense cleaning discs are available at many electronics retail store. Sorry i can't help you more.

SOURCE: Blinking "disc" error
another thing to do is listen to the unit as it spins up, you may be able to hear the disk spinning (though you can definitly see it if you open it up) and you should also be able to hear the mechanism that moves the optics allong the rail. If you hear that but still no read, you might try opening up the case (6 small phillips screws and then a small bit of prying to open) and look to see if the small thin plastic wireing harness is fully seated in the connector on the main board. If not loosen the small brown retaining clip and push the plastic strap with the traces fully into to connector and push the retaining clip back in. I have fixed 2 d-nf420 units this way.

SOURCE: A1000 not switching on
When you have the player stop working and the 'spinning disk' appears, do not bother pressing the reset button-this only switches the unit off. Try giving the unit a sharp shock by dropping it on a carpeted floor from no more than 9-12 inches or holding the unit in your hand and hitting your leg, again with a sharp hit. What ever is skipping in the unit stops and normal operation is resumed. Try not to break your unit by dropping it or hitting it with too much force!

SOURCE: Sony NW-A1000 will not play,
If you get the spinning disc error on your sony nw a1000 it means the hardrive is knackerd.
The hardrive in the sony NW A1000 is a segate ST1.2 6gb and these can be bought off ebay for around £8. If you can't find a 6gb one you can fit an 8gb hardrive BUT your NW A1000 will only use 6gb of it.
If you search on the internet you can find instructions on how to remove the back cover of your NW A1000 which is very easy to do! You then unplug the hardrive (be very careful!) and replace it with the new seagate hardrive. Turn the NW A1000 on and go to the home menu, select "settings", then select "intialize disc" and it will format your new hardrive so that it can work with NW A1000.
