Hi from retired Englishman in SW France,
Unfortunately you have not told us the make and model to be able to decode your 'error 4' ;-0( So- guess time! I would gently suggest as a first step that you clean the drain motor/pump lint tray/filter. So many 'faults' are caused by blocked filters and many machines will not even go to spin or release the door lock if there is any water still left inside.
Here are my complete and general guidance notes for checking both the drain motor filter and the drain motor ;-0)

If you are unsure where the filter is, it is often behind the front lower (kick) panel (or in some machines at the rear in an awkward position!) and most are held in by a round cover/knob. Sometimes the filter will not come out with the cover and you will have to persuade it to come out to play.

REMOVE POWER AND ENSURE YOU HAVE A WATER RECEPTACLE/RAGS TO SOAK UP THE WATER WHICH IS BOUND TO POUR OUT.
It's surprising what people have found in theirs! It is always worthwhile checking it on a regular basis.
Now- whilst the filter is removed it is normally possible to see the drain motor and ensure it is not jammed by a foreign object such as a needle or a toothpick. It should be able to be turned by hand/finger- the power IS OFF!
At this point it is also possible to test if the motor works. No clothes or water in the machine, select a spin cycle and put the power back on. You should be able to see the motor turning at some point, possibly straight away. Using something suitable like a glove see if it is easy to briefly slow the motor down. If it is easy then the motor is malfunctioning.

If this has assisted you please consider a 4 thumbs up for the rating.
Thanks and good luck!
John C

It stops and gives a F 09 error code. The soap is still in the clothes and they are wet, not soaked. Thanks

"F9" is an Overflow Condition error. The following lnk explains how to troubleshoot:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r805532-f09_error_whirlpool_duet_kenmore_elite

Before assuming you have a problem, unplug the washer for AT LEAST 30 minutes. This will reset the Central Control Unit (CCU) which is the main computer of your washer. Sometimes this is all that is required to correct momentary glitches in the program operation. If the error code reappears, following a CCU reset, then you have a legitimate problem.

If you have questions, or require addtional assistance, please let me know. I hope this helps.

CLOTHES STILL WET AFTER SPIN CYCLE

Dear dgloss1856, Sun 4-12-2009 1:14PM EST USA

Washers will shut down automatically without completing the spin cycle for two reasons.
1) Too many clothes in the washer at once (overloading with clothes) !
2) Too much soap in the washer when washing!

When this happens you should restart the machine in the spin cycle or if you can't start in spin run a full cycle without adding soap.

If this doesn't solve the problem you may need to clean the timer or control circuits depending on your machine by cleaning with electronic spray cleaner (available at Radio Shack) by spraying the timer or control circuits as instructed on the can of electronic cleaner.

My clothe come out very wet at the end of the wash cycle

If the pump is clogged and can't release all the water it won't go into final high spin. Remove lower cover and locate coin catch and unscrew it. Water will come out, so be ready. If it's full of stuff, this is probably the problem.
