Sounds like a scam, for you to transfer $500 before receiving the winnings. DON"T DO IT.

How do i find out if I have won a prize

Look at who sent you the email or letter. If you have NOT entered this contest, look out...especially if you are required to pay ANYTHING! You may be a target of phishing, or an organized crime effort, likely Money Laundering!
The scam goes something like this; First, you win a lottery you never entered. Second, in order to receive yohr winnings, you must deposit a check in your bank account and send the lottery company a sum of money out of your account. Then you will receive the full sum ofvyour winnings.
Actually, You have won nothing. The first check you receive is a phony check drawn on a bank that ddoesn't exist. Whenbyou try to deposit that check, if they accept the check, and you withdraw the amount you are supposed to send to the phoney lottery company, you have LAUNDERED MONEY! When. You send the money you withdrawn from your account, and sent it to the phoney lottery company, they have sold you a phoney check for the money you sent them! Then the "lottery company" vanishes and you are the one the authorities come looking for. You can even be charged and convicted for depositing the phoney check and withdrawing the real money!
Be careful if you are told that you "won" something you did not enter to win! And internet lotteries are phonies...everyone"wins"'!

Gud day sir my emaill recieve a lootery wining no. that came from u.k and he told to his letter that i win $250,000 doolar, my question is thats its true ??? yahoo messenger have any lottery promotion???...

Do not believe such mails. I don't know how they do this. But as far as i have read from newspapers and saw in news,it is said that people imposing as manager of banks or some other lotteries will send you mail to deposit some amount and get the lottery amount. When they get the money,they escape with it.

Excerpt from uk national lottery website:
These scams work in two ways:
Method 1: Persuade the victim to part with personal information to allow the scammers to carry out identity theft.
Method 2: Persuade the victim to part with money as an upfront payment in order to release a winning lottery prize which does not exist.

Another excerpt from Uk national lottery website:
  • If the email says 'Winning Notification' or 'Lottery Sweep Stake' in the text, the email you've received is not from The National Lottery;
  • We don't tell players how much they've won in an email;
  • We don't ask for any personal information like name, address or bank details in an email.
There is no need to contact us if you have received a lottery-related scam (fraudulent) email.

Hi:
This is a scam. Do not reply to it. If you reply, they will ask for your banking info to "deposit " your prize , or credit card info, and you will get your account cleaned out! Congrats for not responding to them immediately!

I'm Ganesh from India, from MSNyahoolottery on date :31-01-2010 to my email id : ganesh_hugar@yahoo.co.in ( The Msn/Yahoo Lottery Incorporation PO Box 1010,Liverpool L70 1NL,United Kingdom....

Mr ganesh,

This type of emails are sent only for gathering information regarding persons like their contact number and all so that they can segregate many contacts and sell it to companies for promoting their products. In few cases it has also been observed that they ask you to pay insurance on receipt of a parcel upto 500$ and when you open the parcel it contains nothing and you loose your money. So kindly don't fall for this. I personally receive around 10 such emails daily.

Is this a real winning or is it a scam?

Beware! Its a scam. Do NOT give out any personal information. If you do, they (the senders) will probably ask you to deposit a small fee so they can send you the prize money. After receiving your cash they will move away!
Just send this email to your spam folder.
Just for your information, I also received one of these.
Thank you.
