The head on my Bolens BL110 weed eater is slipping

Check the drive shaft. Within the drive tube there is a tightly sprung drive shaft, check where this connects to the head of the cutting attachment, it could have a worn drive.

Sounds like the upper drive shaft connected to the trimmer housing has slid down. Try holding the unit gas tank down, and turn the inner shaft until it drops back down into the unit, then attach the desired tool.

Trimmer runs but the head wont turn

It may be that the drive shaft is broken, or not engaged to the engine. Make sure the trimmer attachment is locked all the way onto the shaft coming from the engine. If it still doesn't work, check by seeing if any of the other attachments work when you put them on. If they do, you know the drive shaft in the trimmer attachment is probably broken.

MTD series 410 rear tine tiller drive wheels slip

I have the same issue with one I am working on. It appears the keys in the drive shaft are not rotating far enough out on the drive gear side to fully engage in the gear. I have studied and studied this and so far I have been unable to determine why. If I find out I will let you know. I am also trying to figure out what is supposed to pull these keys out of the till engagement gear.

Craftsman 4 cylce weed whip engine runs, but head does not engage

The clutch may be worn out and need replacing. The driveshaft may be broken. The gears in the trimmer head may need replacing. Or the drive shaft is not fully seated in the trimmer engine when put back together.
Look at some of these suggestions.
Good Day.

On my TrimMac 210 when the engine is running the cutter head does not turn

When the engine was running there was no drive to the cutter head. It appeared that the bearing at the bottom of the flexible drive shaft had worn away from the three crimped marks in the exterior drive tube and slipped down, thus the flexible drive shaft inside the main tube was not reaching the cutter head. I made up an exterior tube that just fitted over the main drive tube. I Drilled a 6mm hole through the exterior tube and the main drive tube into the worn bronze bearing. I then brazed a 6 mm nut onto the exterior tube and screwed a 6 mm bolt and lock nut right into the bearing inside the main drive tube. This stopped the bearing moving down and away from the interior flexible drive. The trimmer then worked as it should do. Good Luck, Tony Hillyard, Pleinesa Oeuvres, France

Fix the flexible drive shaft has a problem

The Metal Clamp referenced clamps directly on the end of the '2-Piece Gear Box Assembly'. The gear box assembly is an aluminum casting held together by 3 machine screws. The Metal Clamp does not actually lock the drive shaft housing into the gearbox assembly. The flexible drive shaft cable engages the engine output shaft, and the gear box assembly. This is a fixed length (non-adjustable) assembly.

First ensure that the drive shaft assembly is fully engaged at the quick connect fitting and that the "snap" is engaged. Then make sure the knob is fully tightened. The quick connect allows you to quickly switch between various attachments offered on this unit.

Now, based on your description, it sounds like the 'anti-rotation screw' 791-182519 has backed out or is gone. This will allow the entire cutting assembly (gearbox forward) to slip off of the drive shaft housing and disengage the flexible drive shaft. If your cutting assembly is attempting to rotate while in operation, or the drive is not engaged as you described.
Do not continue to operate the unit until you get this fixed as you could strip out the drive shaft end or cause other serious damage to the equipment or yourself.

If it is the anti-rotation screw, then make sure to push the drive shaft housing firmly into the gear box and ensure to align the holes in the drive shaft housing and the gear box. If the screw is lost, then find one similar sized, but be CERTAIN that it is not too long as it will actually engage the flexible drive shaft and prevent rotation, or cut the drive shaft.

Back to the clamp: If it is still wanting to move, then remove the lock nut and place slightly oversized washers on the bolt head and the lock nut. This will force more pressure (does not take much) on the clamp and will lock it down.

I just fixed mine today (071809) in fact and had to drill a new hole in the drive shaft housing as the original was completely wallowed out.

I hope this helps.

When I add an attachment to my Craftsmen trimmer, they won't spin

When you add the attachments the drive shaft must be aligned perfectly and the connecting tubes fully inserted. Otherwise they will not drive. The drive shavt has 4 flat faces on it and the recepticle for the drive shaft also has 4 faces on it. If they are not mated correctly nothing will work. The drive tube must be fully inserted...... and aligned.
