Just bought my son a new bike and the front cable disc brake dosen't work. Pulling the lever makes and arm move, but nothing happens to the pads! Please help

My 2011 Cube Streamer with Ultegra shifters and 105 front deraileur won't shift down from the big ring.

Push in the lever for shifting to the small ring all the way and let go. Then try to pull out on the shift housing where it enters the lever.

If the housing won't move that means the lever has not released the cable. Try flooding the lever with a light spray lube. If that does not work do a search to see if there is a repair procedure - otherwise the lever will have to be replaced.

If the housing moves out and exposes the cable then there is something binding the cable, and you will have to free it or replace the cable and housing.

Frankly, if it's that important I would think you would have the bike shop fix it.

Okay, so I have a 1996 honda civic ex and since iv'e bought it the steering wheel would shake when I brake from going 40 mph and up. This happens everyday and not only does the steering wheel shake I...

If it only does it during braking, it's not an axle. Likely culprits are warped rotors or bad suspension bushings.

A warpped rotor will cause the brakes on that rotor to grab and release as the rotor goes around, causing a shake. This is often felt in the brake pedal as a pulsing as well.

Failed front suspesion bushings can cause this as well, esppecially on front wheel drive cars.. When you are accelerating, your wheels are pulling the control arms forward, but when you brake, the control arms are pushed backwards. So, depending on what bushings are worn out, your alignment can change pretty drastically going from accelerating to braking or vice-versa. This would also account for the moving/hitting sensation you described. To check this you need to jack up the front of the vehicle and check the control arm bushings, as well as any other bushings for links/parts connected to the control arm.

I have seen this happen before when an update went bad right in the middle of an Internet outage. If you bought this recently, try to return it for a replacement. Otherwise, you will have to contact Samsung's support line to see if there is a Factory hard reset.

My son parked his bike in front of a loca store someone messed up his front brake (I think on purpose) the wire connecting the brake pads on the bike - is loose and the brake pads won't...

Sorry to hear about your sons bike have been messed up. First you have to check out if the brake works. Pull it with your fingers (brake itself, where the cable is attached). If it squeezes and springs back, there is no probs. Then loosen the cable and check if the brake lever works (use it as if you are braking). It should go down and spring back itself. If it does, there is no probs. In that case all you have to do is to loosen the cable at the brake itself and then re-fit it by pulling the cable with pliers and securing it with the appropriate screw.

The disc brakes may seem like a new a completely different technology, but really they adjust basically the same as rim brakes. Both of your problems sound like the cables have too much slack in them. There is a mounting bolt for the cables at the brake, loosen that, pull the cable taught, tighten the bolt and squeeze the levers again. If that is better and the brakes don't drag, there you go.

If it still doesn't fix the brakes, then it is time to consider taking the bike into a bike shop and letting the mechanic have a look.

I have a Mongoose Blackcomb. When I apply the front disc brake the cable and actuator arm do not retract back to open position. Does the entire front brake need replacing are can this be repaired?

Impossible to tell you with out seeing the brake.

However, the brake can be repaired. I would suggest taking into your local bike shop so they can assess what is causing the sticking brake, it could be a very simple fix, such as adjusting the spring tension, to a more complicated fix that involves replacing broken parts. Some brake systems do not have available replacement parts and in those cases you would have to replace, but that is less common.

If you can, take off your front wheel and prop the bike up so you can see the brake working while you squeeze the lever, see if the pads move in and out. that is the first step to diagnosis. If they don't return, then look for a round adjustment knob on the side of the brake and see if that moves the pads in or out, if that knob does nothing that is most likely your problem.

The left brake is disconnected, how do I reconnect it?

You'll have to remove the mounting bolt from that arm with the proper size allen key. Clean the post and lube it. While you have the arm off have a look at the spring . It may be broken or just disconnected from where it is supposed to be attached. Also check that the brake cable is moving freely in the guide(noodle) and is attached properly to the opposing brake arm.When you have the pivot lubed slide the brake arm back on and make sure it pivots properly. Readjust the brakes and you should be in business. The front brakes and the back brakes work the same so look at the working set and compare to the non working set if you need a guideline to go by. If you have hydraulic brakes you will have to take the bike in to be serviced as it requires specialized tools. Hope this helps.

Brake adjustment promax aluminum linear pull

assuming the wheel is centered in the frame and all is working well, the pressure springs need to be adjusted. using the pressure screws (small screw sticking out of thr side of the brake) you can adjust the return pressure of each side. Loosen the screw on the side that is moving a quarter turn, tighten the screw on the side that does not move. squeeze the brake lever, check operation, continue until the brakes work equally.
