Question about Microwave Ovens

1 Answer

Whenever using my microwave, it sparks/arcs where the silver mesh fits onto the ceiling of the microwave. The silver mesh also needs replacing as it has deterioted... Please assist. There are no serial numbers or info on the microwave to identify model. It has a silver powder finish. And process of elimination does not match the four listed on your site (do not look like mine). Thanks

There should be a model number tag inside the cooking cavity, near or around the door frame or control panel, or on the back of the oven.

You can find links to helpful exploded view diagrams and part ordering help for most brands here.

I recommend that you bookmark that link to your favorites.

If you can't find the model number, you'll need to order a piece of universal waveguide material and use the old waveguide cover as a template to cut out a new one.

You can find that at Encompass here or you can call them toll-free at 866-779-5835.

It is part # 40QBP1012 UNIVERSAL WAVEGUIDE MATERIAL 10" X 12" (Cut To Fit)

If you don't have the old one, you can use a sheet of paper to trace the area where it goes, then transfer that pattern to the waveguide material, which can be cut with a razor, utility knife, or scissors.

We're happy to help you with free advice and we'd appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

  1. Waveguide coverSparking and arcing in a microwave can be caused by a damaged waveguide cover. Try removing the waveguide cover to see if the problem persists. Once removed, the waveguide cover can be inspected for burns, which will indicate if this is the issue. If the waveguide cover is burnt or will not stay in the proper spot it will need to be replaced.
  2. Cavity/Rack supportIf sparking or arcing in your microwave is near a rack support, any exposed metallic area can be covered with a microwave cavity support. It is also recommended to replace the rack supports in this situation to ensure the issue is resolved.
  3. Cavity paintIf sparking or arcing in the microwave is visible on the side walls, the paint covering the metallic areas could have worn off or chipped. This can possibly cause pitting in the side walls or ceiling. If this is the case, it can be repaired with microwave cavity pain

    Popping and shooting sparks

    Hi There!
Check behind the "Wave Guide Cover" on the inside cavity. There may be moisture or food residue behind it. Should be a cover that is plastic or Mica. Really strange that it's sparking being new. Also check that you use plates without gold or silver trimmings (Crockery or porcelein). This will also cause sparking. Remember that microwaves will always go to the first organic source in its path. The wave guide cover, if soiled, is very close to the tip of the Magnetron and will therefor result in arcing. Good Luck, JUS004

    Microwave oven defective

It's actually a stirrer. Its purpose is to scatter the microwaves to ensure even cooking, similar to the way a turntable does in other models. Having a stirrer instead of a turntable allows for a bigger dish.

The sparking is usually caused by deposits or grease or food debiris which heat, reheat and arc.

If the oven is used very long without the cover, that debris and grease can get onto the magnetron and ruin it.
