I have the exact problem, did the conversion fix it?

  • donallog Oct 28, 2008

I have identical symptoms. Took it to repair service hoping for recall repair. Mine was Type 5 so not covered by recall. Called Black and Decker who said symptoms related to recall were not mine but an overheating problem. Apparently to fix mine need to replace a board which was also the solution to the recall problem. The symptoms almost seem mechanical - plastic key doesn't drop down completely - as opposed to electronic. Why is an electronic board @ $280 needed to fix?

    Any suggestions re next steps.

Crazy one ...had a professional look at it and of coarse no problems when he arrived...Problem runs without the key.....yup...think it is the circuit breaker...when the key is is...

Now if want to eliminate the circuit breaker first unplug the unit remove motor shroud locate the breakers connection and by-pass the breaker and reconnect the unit insert key and see in you have the same results then proceed to the next procedure below, if the unit is work without a hitch then replace breaker
Without knowing the make and model this is a good guess. Now why I say the key switch is that if it is a key you insert into a slot then its engaging the switch mechanically ( my guess you have a mechanical switch). Now if its a magnetic key their is a glass reed switch that is engaged. The only way to find this out is to remove the upper console and if it has a back plate remove that,a mechanical switch 7 out 10 time it would be visually apparent if not you may have to remove the electronics to see it. If you a multi meter remove the switch place the leads on switch spades ( inspect the spades if tarnished then use an erasure to clean the spades) and mechanically engage the switch. Notice any hesitation in switch engaging it may not be making contact internally if so replace the switch.

My cmm1000 type 4 lawnmower does not start

Check to see that the starter cable isn't pushed in or out a bit too far and causing the kill switch to engage. It is only held in place by tie wraps and can cause the machine to act as if it can't be charged and/or won't run. Once the cable has been adjusted into the correct position, everything works as expected.

I started mower in tall grass. It started up and immediately stopped. Could not get it started. Replaced battery. Charged 12 hours. Still will not operate. Green light is on. Noticed the blade seems to...

After charging the mower, you must place the safety key in the mower before it will start. On models that have a bail handle, be sure to pull the bail handle back to the mower handle before engaging the start lever. If your mower still does not start, remove the safety key and ensure the bail and start lever are in the "off" position. Then firmly re-insert the safety key, pull the bail handle to the mower handle and engage the start lever.

Note - It is important that the bail and start lever are returned to the "off" position before inserting the safety key.
Give it try, if it still will not operate you may have to take it in for service.
Good luck, let me know.

Lawnmower Model CMM1000 Batterys will not charge.

All of a sudden mine also acted like it wouldn't take a charge and the needle wouldn't move. The plastic safety key also wouldn't insert smoothly as it used to and I would have to push the start lever before it would drop in. When I checked the charger, it was putting out 24v. When I opened up the lid I noticed that the starter cable was pushing the safety switch incorrectly. If it was moved a bit, the mower would then start. The starter cable is only secured to the handle by tie wraps. So if it gets moved around, it can cause the kill switch to be in the kill position. So now if I have a problem, I just move the cable in or out a bit. Fortunately, this find saved me a trip to the dealer and who knows how much $$$$.
