Question about Computers & Internet
There are a large number of OSes which are available for free on the internet . Most of them are linux based , with each having a slightly different interface and a different method to install programs (also referred to as package management) . They are popularly referred to as linux distros. Depending on how old your laptop is, and you requirements, you can choose an appropriate distro . For laptops which have been bought within 3-4 years , UBUNTU (http://www.ubuntu.com/) is a good choice . For new linux users LinuxMint (http://www.linuxmint.com/) is a good option with lots of settings and applications preconfigured . In case it is a old machine and will be mainly used for internet surfing and web based applications then a netbook OS like Joli OS http://www.jolicloud.com/download is a good option. These OS offer fast boot times and good web compatibility .
To install any these , you can go to the website and download the OS and burn it to a CD/DVD . Some of these OS can be directly installed without the need to burn a CD . You can also try out these OS without installing . This is called Live-Boot .
I hope this answers your question .
