The DC jack is for power, i.e. Direct Current. If you plug in your power adapter and your laptop says it's charging, then it's working fine.

Wait a minute. What?

From what I read;
1) One wire of the AC adapter (Charger) is hot to the touch.
'.....when I touch the charge one part of the wire is very hot."

2) AC adapter checks out as far as voltage is concerned.
"I tested the charger voltage and everything is ok."

3) "Sometimes when I touch the charge appear the icon...Could it be the charger broken wire?"

Does this mean, "Sometimes when I touch the AC adapter (Charger), the battery icon appears."?

Battery is CHARGING icon?

Could it be a broken wire in the power cable TO charger?

Uh, yeah.

1) AC adapter NOT plugged into the DC Power Jack, plug the power cable of the AC adapter into power.

Multimeter set to DC Voltage, and proper scale, red Positive lead to harness wire that goes to DC Power Jack's center pin;

,black Negative lead of multimeter, to wire that goes to DC Power jack's inside cylindrical metal shell;

Now gently wiggle the cable from the AC adapter, TO the DC Power Jack of the laptop.

Do you get an intermittent reading?

25 Watt soldering iron?
.025 or .030 rosin core solder?

Desoldering Tool, or Desoldering Braid? (Solder Wick)
Side Cutters instead, and slightly shortened the wires of the DC Power Jack's harness?
(Then tinned the wires, and soldered the wires of the DC Power Jack harness, to DC Power Jack?)

Damp sponge, and cleaned the well tinned No.2 chisel tip, of the soldering iron, frequently? Used rosin solder flux?

Center pin wire (Positive), of harness cable TO DC Power Jack, was soldered to the center pin of the DC Power Jack?

Negative wire of cable TO DC Power Jack, was soldered to the inside shell of the DC Power Jack?
(Cylindrical shell, inside the DC Power Jack, that surrounds the center pin of the jack)

Sure there are no cold solder joints?

Not trying to 'browbeat' you, just am curious.

1) IF you are SURE you have the polarity correct, of the wires in the harness cable, that goes to the DC Power Jack;

,and you are SURE there is no broken wire, in the cable from the AC adapter (Charger) TO the DC Power Jack;

,and you are sure you made good solder joints;

I suspect the power correcting chipset on the motherboard, to be bad, or perhaps a Diode.

One example of the chipset I am referring to. This one is used in a lot of laptops. May not be used in yours, but gives you something to refer to when looking for a bad chipset, in the power stage, on your motherboard,

Usually when bad the top of the chipset will be blackened, or bubbled.
A Diode is a one way valve for electricity. When they go bad it is visually obvious.

I am assuming you mean the DC jack on the motherboard in your laptop?
You can repair it yourself, or take it to a repair shop and pay to have someone do it.
To repair it yourself, you'll need:
1) A new DC jack (though sometimes you can fix the broken one)
2) The disassembly guide to your specific model of laptop. Google the phrase "laptop make/model disassembly" and one should come up pretty quickly. Guides are generally step-by-step with pictures included, and putting it back together is just the reverse of disassembly.
3) A soldering iron and solder. 15-30 watts for delicated boards like a motherboard. Once you've pulled your motherboard out, You can de-solder the broken DC jack from the motherboard (if necessary) and solder the new one on. DC jacks are generally 2-4 solder points and fairly simple to press back on.

How do I check for faulty DC socket (power jack) in my asus eee pc


1) Start out by removing all power to the laptop.
Of course you probably have the AC adapter (Charger) removed, but also remove the Battery.

See if you can gently wiggle the Center Post.
Also look to see if it seems that the entire DC Power Jack is moving around.

You may have to scrutinize pretty close to see any perceptible movement.
There should be No perceptible movement at all.

This is an example of a DC Power Jack for an Asus Eee 1005HAB Notebook PC.
It may, or may not, be The DC Power Jack you will need, but is used here for an example of the DC Power Jack construction,

Looking at the view on the far left, the Front view. You will see what appear as three pins sticking up.
These are Prongs.
Shown again in the Back view, which is the middle example.

These two views show the DC Power Jack upside down, in relation to how it sits on the motherboard.
The Prongs go down through holes in copper circuit traces on the top of the motherboard, and are soldered to the motherboard on the bottom side.

A) From accidentally bumping the AC adapter's plug while inserted into the DC Power Jack, the solder joints may have cracked. This can also happen with just normal usage from plugging, and unplugging the AC adapter.

Solution for this is to re-solder the cracked solder joints.
Sounds easy, but in reality the entire laptop has to be disassembled down to the bare motherboard in your hand. No Processor on the motherboard, no Ram Memory, no nada, but the bare motherboard.

Soldering can ruin a Processor, Ram Memory, or associated hardware components still installed on the motherboard.

B) The DC Power Jack may be broken. The Black body of the DC Power Jack that you see in the examples, is made of plastic.
This entails de-soldering the Prongs of the DC Power Jack, removing it, properly cleaning the area, (area around the copper circuit trace holes in the motherboard), re-tinning the area around the circuit trace holes, then installing the new DC Power Jack, and soldering it into place.

C) The motherboard area that the DC Power Jack is soldered to, can be compared to a 'Peninsula'.
A small strip of motherboard that sticks out away from the main body of the motherboard.
This 'peninsula' can crack at the area where it meets the motherboard.
This will result in stretched broken circuit traces.

[Think of a circuit trace as being a very flat, thin, copper wire ]

If this has occurred toss the motherboard.


[ In regards to the DC Power Jack repair guide in the link above;

1. You don't need a soldering station. A soldering iron around 40 to 50 Watts with a No.2 chisel tip, and well tinned, will work just fine. Have a very damp sponge nearby to constantly clean the tip with.

2. I advise using Desoldering Braid instead of a Desoldering Tool. The braid is laid on the solder joint to be removed. The tip of the soldering iron is laid right on the braid, above the solder to be removed. The copper braid will 'soak up' the solder.
A lot handier than a Desoldering Tool IMHO.

3. Isopropyl Alcohol is EXTREMELY FLAMMABLE! Do not use near the soldering iron, and use in a WELL ventilated area with NO sparks or flames present!

4. If you are rusty with your soldering/de-soldering techniques, practice awhile before attempting this procedure.

Do Not overheat the copper circuit trace area around the holes. This will burn the area, and it won't accept tinning. (Tinning: Applying a light coat of solder) If it will not accept tinning, toss the motherboard at the cat. It's junk.

Overheating can also lift the copper circuit trace right off of the motherboard.
Make SURE you make a pretty, clean, solder joint. A cold solder joint will result in you starting all over.
It's a pain in the keister to disassemble the laptop in order to repair a cold solder joint.

Make sure the soldering iron tip is clean, and well tinned before you start.
Clean the tip often by wiping it across the damp sponge ]

The center pin of your DC Power Jack may be 1.0mm in diameter, or it may be 1.65mm
Make sure you obtain THE correct DC Power Jack.
The one's that are advertised around $2 to $5 may be junk, and no where near the actual DC Power Jack you need.

This place may be the one to go to. Don't know, haven't tried them, and not advertising for them.
I do like how they want you to send a photo in, and they also ask questions BEFORE you purchase.
IMHO it seems as though they may be professionals in their area of expertise,

If you wish to have a Service Manual I do not see any online links to give you, except for one that details how to disassemble down to the Harddrive.
From there it would be a guide to an Asus Eee PC that is fairly close IMHO.

So how is the DC Power Jack solder joints on that Fujitsu Lifebook?

The DC Power Jack (DC IN) is the jack on the laptop where the AC adapter (Charger) plugs into.

Do any of them look oxidized?
Dull finish on any of the solder joints holding the DC Power Jack to the motherboard.

De-solder and makes fresh solder joints.

Are any of the solder joints cracked?
Cracked at the area of the solder joints to the bottom of the motherboard.
Re-solder.

What condition is the DC Power Jack itself?
Physical condition of the jack.
Bad physical condition requires replacing.

Do you see any discoloration, or burn spots on the chips on the motherboard?
(I.C., Integrated Circuit = Chip and Chipset)

There is a sensor chip on the motherboard for power. Senses when the battery needs to be charged, or doesn't, and when the laptop is to just use the AC adapter power.

If so replace the motherboard.

How to replace dc power jack for toshiba p15


Take apart laptop and see what type of jack is on your system. There are two types. one is soldered on and the other is a module that connects to the motherboard with a wire connector.

If you have a soldered on type the you will need to de-solder it from the board then solder a new one onto the board. most ac jack issue just need to resolder it unless the jack itself is broken.

If you are referring to the DC Jack..(the port where your AC Adapter Plugs into) then typically No, THey are cheap enough that it is best to replace with new.... Yes they can be repaired, but chances are they won't hold up to the stress, and will just cause problems down the road...

Desolder The Faulty DC Jack... Go Slow, Use Solder Wick/Desoldering Braid... And A Solder Gun...Flip Motherboard to the underside of the DC Jack, You want to put a very small amount of FRESH solder on all Pin ends of the DC Jack - this will allow better flow of the solder when trying to remove...
Then Use The Desoldering Braid and slowly remove the solder from the DC Jack Pin Contact Areas... Do Not Rush or you will ruin the contact pads on the motherboard, you must make sure all solder is removed,,, if you attempt to rip out the jack cause you think its "good enough" you will end up pulling the C ring from the center of the Jack Pin Hole...

Once You Have All Solder Removed Use Some Flux Paste And Again go over each pin to ensure all solder is gone, then you can remove the faulty DC Jack...

Now.. Clean the motherboard where the DC Jack Was... Remove All Old Flux and take your solder gun and go over the Jacks contact pads so that you have fresh solder on all...

Now Add a small amount of flux to all the DC Jack Contact Pads and add alittle to the Pins on the replacement DC Jack.....

Then Solder The New DC Jack Into Place... Solder The BottomSide First... The Pin Ends ..

Then Flip Over and add small amount to the side negative pins and the power pin(s)...

Now you are done..

You can add Some Heat Resistant Automotive Epoxy ( Safe On Electronics) to the sides and back of the new dc jack.... this will double the strength and prevent future damage/wear and tear...

Do Not Attemp to Replace the Jack Unless You Have Experience with Soldering... The Original DC Jack Must First Be Desoldered and Removed... You Need A Desoldering Pump or Solder Wick (braid) To Remove the Old Solder From The Jack Post Pins..... DO NOT ATTEMP TO RIP OUT THE OLD JACK!!!!! You Will Pull The Contact rings from the center of the motherboard out and render the motherboard useless...


Slowly and carefully Unsolder the dc jack, Remove it and Clean the board.... Very Important to Clean the Motherboard after desoldering the old jack.... You Must Remove all old Flux...

Then Apply a light layer of fresh solder to all the contacts on the motherboard....

Apply Flux paste to the New DC Jack Pins and a light amount onto the contacts on the motherboard....

Insert the new DC JAck Into The Slots and Apply Solder to all points on the underside of the motherboard....

Flip The Motherboard Back Over, To THe Side Where THe DC Jack Is,, and Apply Flux then a light amount of Solder To The Side Pins and Back Power Pins ...


Then Clean the Motherboard off again using an Electronics grade circuit board cleaner (found at radio shack) or a tiny amount of denatured alcohol applied to a paper towel .. THe Purpose is to remove any remaining Flux..... as this will just deteriorate the New Solder over time unless cleaned off...

Hi,

If the laptop still works, then there would be no need to replace the motherboard. The DC jack is replaceable/repairable. What would be more challenging is the disassembly and eventual exposing of the bottom part of the circuitry where the DC jack is soldered into. Often the DC jack would have at least 2 solder point (not more than 3). This might interest you.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Dc jack removel


I believe the DC jack is soldered to the board on that model. It must be unsoldered to remove (from the bottom of the board) and the new one soldered on. A soldering iron and a solder sucker (to cleanly remove hot solder) can be bought at Radio Shack, HOWEVER if you've never soldered before I would NOT ATTEMPT TO DO THIS REPAIR MYSELF! It's very easy to toast the motherboard if you don't know what you're doing. I would suggest finding a local electronics/computer repair shop that knows how to work with SMT components. Ask them for an anti-static bag for the motherboard and just bring the motherboard and new jack down to them to have the new one installed. It shouldn't cost more than $40 to replace that way and more like $20-30. Good Luck, El Duderino
