SOURCE: audio driver is not installed
i have the same computer (dell optiplex gx280). yeah windowsXP does not support it so i went to dell.com to download the sound driver for my model and it worked well. i think its the ADI 198x Integrated Audio Driver.
follow the link below
if the link does not work then you have to do it manually. go to dell.com under support/drivers and downloads. just follow instructions. choose desktop and then the model. afterwards it'll show the drivers selection.

SOURCE: DELL GX 280 CPU PROBLEMS
This problem is normally due to some bad capacitors in your motherboard. Dell is aware of it and as a computer tech for 18 years, it's one of my biggest problem were I work.
Please check the capacitors that are closest to the fan. If you see capacitor are blow-up or bad that is your problem, and they most be replaced. Here is website that would help you in how to change it http://www.thecapking.com/. Good luck

If you do you will probably need to replace the proccessor also. The proccessor is what is DuoCore and the the motherboard needs to support it
