Question about Onkyo Audio Players & Recorders
This symptoms indicated that the processor sensed malfunction (shorts/overload/out-of-regulation in the power supply) upon self test. I've read your comment and I've suspected that the problem is most likely in the output amplifier stage of the unit.
First disconnect all the inputs and speakers connected to the unit and turn it on naked. This is to isolate the loads, inputs from fault.

It Sounds like your receiver is going into protection mode. contacting Onkyo may save you alot of hustling. otherwise, please indicate exact onkyo model and give some more brief background for followup.
