External Hard drive setup

You can run Disk Management (check the unallocated space if any):
Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management (please run as administrator; right click it), Disk Management.
Click on the hard drive info, right click, and you can do some actions (expand the volume is the one you need)

Windows 7 doesnt recognize external hard drive

In my opinion either the dive is bad or the power supply is bad. A bad power supply can be fixed by getting a new case, $20 on Amazon, Ebay, etc. Data on a bad drive may be recovered by using specialized software. I used DiskInternals(.com) "UnEraser" successfully to recover data from a disk that would not mount.

Beeping external hard drive

Gone mate. Your hard disk is dead. I think the head is damaged. You can't do anything. Unless you have another HDD from same manufacture, same size. you can replace card on HDD and have a go, otherwise forget that HDD.

I have a terabyte Western Digital external hard drive. I'm using Windows 7. The drive keeps resetting itself to say Write-Protection on. It won't let me install anything onto it most of the time. Can you...

You're getting "clues" that the disk-drive is about to completely FAIL.

While you still can, copy all the files from the drive onto your disk-drive, and/or onto blank DVD-writable media.

Then, check if the device is still under warranty;
if it is, exercise the warranty to get a replacement.

If not under warranty, then WD has a "Customer Loyalty Program".
Access their online store, and cite the serial-number of your unit, and you'll get a discount on the purchase of another WD device.

So my terabyte (external) is showing as a local disk hen i explore...it is saying "corrupt or unreadable" and when i go to properties it is showing all 0 of 0 is used...am i stuck?

Hello Pmtarq, hi, there are two possible bad part, first your hard drive is really bad, you need to reformat your drive, all data will be lost. (this is the common solution) or second the device electronics is bad, you can not do anything if the device fails, all you can do is salvage the hard drive. (this is a long shot, but possible)

Ps3 and 1tb hard disk

This one may only have one possible solution.

You probably have heard that the PS3 will support up to a terabyte hard drive. That is true for most of them.

However, depending on the version of PS3, you may have to see if it is possible to flash the BIOS of the PS3. I talked to a Sony representative about the hard drive and it will support a 1 terabyte hard drive.

Contact sony to see if it is possible to flash the PS3 BIOS so it will recognize the drive.

Need to transfer copied files to x301 after full restore

create a new folder in your hard-disk and first try to copy 1-2 files from the external hard-drive to the new folder (copy any data/work/images you have stored/created not any files of windows folder or root of c: drive)

if the above copy works then copy back all except the c: root and these folders - Windows folder, Document & settings, Program Files

When a file is delete, it's still there on the drive, just as before; all that happens is that the file table marks it as free space and changes its name so it's no longer visible. There are a number of "undelete" utilities available, including several good ones, like asoftech data recovery that helped me before:
