Yeah I unplugged and plugged...geez, didn't work. Looks like it is the bulged capacitors. I have a friend who's an electrician, but I'll call LG tomorrow to make sure what the problem could be. These damn TVs, it's like they're made to blow up right after the warranty expires. The "old school square TVs" may not have picture quality any more, but damn when you bought one it would last a good 20 years. Tried Dynex, tried Sharp, tried LG, tried Samsung, it's like what's left? I can't buy a new TV every year. Sorry, just a little venting.

Unplug the tv for about 5 minutes. If it comes back on and plays properly then you are likely to have a bad power supply which has bulged capacitors on it. If you are proficient in soldering and unsoldering you can save buying the entire power supply. The bad capacitors will be domed or bulged on the top. They are cylinder shaped components and good ones are flat on top (usually). You can usually get capacitors at Radio Shack and are the radial type and not axial. Radial is the two pins at the same end.. Do a search with your model number in Ebay or Google or shopjimmy.com to find a power supply should you need one. Be sure to match the picture for picture with your power supply and also match the numbers

TV just turned off while watching it - red power light flashing now and burning smell

The flashing red light means there is a problem that cannot be fixed on it's own. there is a good chance it is shot. You may have to take it in but most likeley it will cost close what replacing it would cost.

Tv won't turn on, keeps flashing red, will not turn a solid color

Sounds like the lamp needs to be replaced.

Before any repair or replacement, unplug the tv from the electricity for an hour, plug it in. This forces a system reset on the tv and may solve the problem. More likely you need a new lamp.

Akai PT5598HDX/SMS won't turn on

Just a thaught, I could be wrong, maybe a problem with the power button on the remote ? It might shut the TV off, and when you do keep pressing the remote button, the red light on the TV will keep flashing like that also. Ive seen this prob on a few other blogs, so seems to be pretty common. I know I like to keep the remote pointed at the TV all the time, maybe try pointing it away for a while, just to see.
