Question about Garmin Nuvi 660 GPS Receiver

2 Answers

I have had my Garmin for four years. Recently it has started shutting off when I'm driving with the set plugged into the adapter outlet. If I press the power switch, it will reboot, but then after a couple of minutes it shuts down again.

Garmin is voluntarily recalling certain nuvi devices that contain a specific battery that was manufactured by a third-party supplier within a limited date code range.
Garmin has identified potential overheating issues with the use of these batteries in certain nuvi devices with a specific printed circuit board (PCB) design. Additional information about the nuvi battery PCB recall can be found in Service Alert Number: 1035.

The models that may be impacted by the nuvi battery PCB recall are the 200W, 250W, 260W, 7xx and 7xxT (where xx is a two-digit number). To determine if your unit is affected, please visit www.garmin.com/nuvibatterypcbrecall and enter your nuvi's serial number. If your unit has the specific PCB design and contains a battery from the specific date range, you will be given instructions on how to return your nuvi for a battery replacement at no charge.
You should not attempt to remove or service the battery on your own; all battery replacements must be serviced through Garmin's authorized service provider.
If you do not have web access, you may contact Garmin through one of the phone numbers below:

  • In the United States and Canada, call (866) 957-1981
  • In North America and South America outside the U.S. or Canada call (913) 397-8200
  • In Europe, Middle East, and Africa, call +44 870 850 1242 or 0808 238 0000
  • In Asia, call 886/2.2642.9199
  • In Australia, call 1800 113 738; and in New Zealand call 0800 427 652
Repair time will vary based upon location. U.S. customers, please allow 10-16 business days to receive your repaired or replacement device. Canadian customers, due to increased shipping and customs clearance times, please allow 20-30 business days to receive your repaired or replacement device.

Garmin sincerely regrets the inconvenience that this recall has caused and is making every effort to cooperate with customers, dealers, and regulatory agencies worldwide to ensure all parties are assisted according to national regulatory standards

The battery recall was not for the Nuvi 6xx series, whcih appears to be what the person who was asking a question had. Even with a bad battery or even with the battery physically removed from the unit, it should not turn off on its own while powered by an external power source.

    There is something else wrong.

If you can open the housing on your own, you can buy a replacement battery to install it and all the problem will be resolved. For 3rd party garmin battery, I suggest you to come to www.batterybay.net to take a look. They have all sorts of battery including Garmin GPS battery. The price they offer may not be the lowest, but their inventory should be the widest I think.

There is more to this issue than just the battery. A insulated spacer is also placed over the new battery. It is a saftey issue.

Computer will not turn on even with power cord

1. Disconnect any devices connected to the computer including printers, hubs, and third-party keyboards or mice, and test the computer again by trying to turn it on.
2. Find out whether the battery on your Apple portable has power. Press the small button on the side or bottom of the computer, depending on the model. Lights should indicate the battery's level of charge. A single blinking light means the battery needs to be recharged. Connect the adapter to recharge the battery.
3. Unplug the power adapter from the electrical outlet and from the MacBook Pro. Wait one minute. Plug it back into the wall first, then to the computer. Make sure the electrical outlet is working by plugging in another device (such as a lamp). When you plug the adapter back into the computer, the power adapter LED should light up green or amber. If the light does not come on or the computer continues to not power on, proceed to step four.
4. Inspect your MagSafe power adapter. See Apple Portables: Troubleshooting MagSafe adapters for instructions on cleaning the adapter and more details for these steps:
  • Check the MagSafe connector on the adapter for any bent or damaged pins, debris, or alignment issues with the connector.
  • Check the MagSafe connector on the computer for any debris, damaged pins, or alignment issues.
  • Check the MagSafe adapters cabling for any wear or cable issues.
5. Make sure you are using the adapter that was designed for your computer. If you aren't sure or if you need a different adapter, learn which adapter is appropriate for your computer.
6. Review the steps for resetting the SMC (System Management Controller) on your Apple portable computer.
7. If you recently installed additional memory or a hard drive not made by Apple, make sure it is installed correctly and is compatible with your computer.
8. If you are still unable to start up your computer after trying each of these steps, schedule a service appointment with an Apple Retail Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider.

What's your problem? the wii wont turn on

    • 1 Disconnect any accessories, such as GameCube controllers or SD cards.
    • 2 Unplug your Nintendo Wii AC adapter from the wall outlet and from the back of your Nintendo Wii. Leave the adapter disconnected for two minutes. Reconnect the adapter to the console and plug the outlet end straight into a wall outlet, not a surge protector.
    • 3 Remove the AC adapter from the wall outlet again. If the Wii has yet to turn on, the problem may lie within your electrical outlet. Plug a lamp, nightlight or something electrical into the outlet the AC adapter was connected to. If the outlet appears to work, then you'll have to test the AC adapter itself.
    • 4 Run your fingers along the AC adapter cable and visually look for any damage, such as frayed wires or a cracked piece of cable. Also look for the model number "RVL-002" and "Wii" on the adapter. If you don't see the "RVL-002" model number and "Wii" on the adapter, then you are using an unlicensed adapter, which can cause instability and power failure. If the adapter has incurred any damage, you will likely have to buy a new adapter.
    • 5 Spray air to clean out the vents on the back of the Nintendo Wii. If your Wii has been sitting for a long time, then dust and dirt may have built up around the vents, preventing the console from cooling itself. If the console cannot cool itself, it overheats and shuts down.
    • 6 Click "Start," "Internet Explorer" and visit the Nintendo repair page (see Resources) to open a repair claim. If you tried the above steps and your Wii has yet to power on, your system probably needs professional repair.

Hello

Plug the microwave into the outlet if the microwave won't power up. Make sure the plugs on the microwave match the type of outlet. A four-pronged outlet can only be used with a four-pronged plug. Same with three-pronged outlets---they only work with three-pronged plugs.

Inspect the plug. Make sure it hasn't been cut or tampered with. Four-pronged plugs can't be cut down to fit a three-pronged outlet. Three-pronged plugs mustn't be forced into four-pronged outlets. A three-pronged plug mustn't be used in a two-pronged outlet, either.

Replace blown fuses, or if there's a circuit breaker, check it for tripped breakers. Sometimes the trip won't be obvious, so cycle the circuit breakers. Turn them all the way off and then back on again.

Plug another appliance in the outlet. You will find this easier with three-pronged appliances. Simply plug a toaster, or other appliance into the microwave's outlet, and see if it works. If it works, you know the problem is with the microwave, not the power circuit. Have the microwave serviced or replace it. If the toaster or other appliance doesn't turn on, you know the problem is with the circuit.

The internal battery might be worn out. If the Garmin is used on a weekly basis over the past 2 years, i'd say the battery has done it's job and needs replacement.

Though if it's used sporadically and left in the drawer over the past 2 years there should be more battery lifetime in there.

A battery replacement requires opening the Garmin backcover with a Hex / Torque screwdriver set. Garmin's policy is to have the battery replaced by a Garmin dealer. If warranty has expired and you're comfortable with opening electronic devices it could easily be a DIY job.

A battery can be bought over the internet including a Hex/Torque screwdriver set.

Garmin won't start

have you dropped it recently? gotten it wet? any kind of damages?

also you could have a bad power outlet in your car that isn't giving your gps enough juice to start up. that happened to me and i just plugged it into a different outlet and it worked fine. might check your fuses to your outlets also in your car.

could also try plugging it into your computer to try and update the software.
