Some-times those connectors are not connected to the respective plug in points on the mainboard. That is a possible reason for them not working.

A solution to this problem would be to open up the chassis and ensure that the ports are indeed plugged into the mainboard.
Intel based computer systems use AC'97 and AMD based computers use HD Audio.

You may need to consult the mainboard manual to correctly plug the ports in.

The other way is to use the ports located at the rear of your computer chassis, however as you may have experienced it may mean that the cables on your mic/earphones are not long enough. In which case you will have to check that the front headers are plugged in.

Remember that when using a microphone you need to specify which port/audio in port you are using rear or front.

Take care!

Or instead of having to open up your computer and messing with the mobo. Just use the control panel in to disable the headphone jack.

Dell laptop headphone sound on out headphone no sound

Sound Loss in Dell Computer Headphones b> Most Dell computers have special hardware and software that are set up to automatically adjust the configuration of the headphone ports when headphones are connected, muting the primary speakers in the process. If no sound is coming out of your headphones, this is most likely caused by a configuration issue that can be resolved with a few simple steps.

Basic Headphone Troubleshooting
If no sound is coming from your headphones, confirm that the headphones work properly by using them with a different device. After this, confirm that the headphones are plugged into the proper jack. If your CD/DVD drive has a headphone jack in front, audio will only be played through this jack when you are playing a disc. On a desktop computer, the correct jack to use for headphones is usually color-coded green, while notebook computers will have headphone icons next to the correct jacks. Finally, check the speaker icon in the system tray to make sure that your sound output is not muted. b> Troubleshooting Notebooks b> Most Dell notebooks use a special type of audio jack. The jack, along with the sound drivers that are installed, automatically detect whether headphones or speakers are plugged in and adjust the sound output accordingly. If this does not happen when headphones are plugged in, the sound drivers may be at fault. Visit the Dell support website and download the most recent sound drivers for your notebook. If this does not help, some users have reported success with removing the sound drivers completely and letting Windows install generic drivers automatically. Last Resort b> If all other options have been exhausted, the last resort in troubleshooting a headphone jack is running a complete system recovery operation. This will completely erase all of the information on your primary hard drive partition and reinstall Windows along with the drivers for all of your hardware. This is an extreme measure, as you will lose all of the information that you have stored on the hard drive. However, it will resolve the issue if it is caused by a software problem. If the issue remains, the headphone jack must be replaced. Hope this helps.

How do i use earphones to listen to music and video on my computer

The lighter gray, curved front panel of the computer can be flipped up to expose two usb ports and a headphone jack. Plug your headphones into the round hole.

Can't get headphone jack on front of computer to work

The headphone jack up front may not be connected to the PC's integrated audio on the motherboard (or to the PC's sound card if you purchased one with the system instead. There'll be an audio cable running from the front of the computer to a port on the motherboard. If you look at this motherboard diagram for the Vostro 220 (not the 420 or 220s), it'll be the port numbered "15" that's the opne for the audio for the front panel. You don't need the speakers plugged on the back to have the headphones work, but having them plugged in will at least tell you if the sound is working or not.

Dell Inspiron 1525 : headphone and mic problem

That front panel jack option is probably a feature included in some Dell software that you installed on the computer. Go to dell.com and find the audio drivers and install all of the drivers that look like they would apply to your system.
