I have windows xp on emachine t2682. how can I obtain wireless for this computer? I also have a wireless router in my home on another computer.

All you need is a wireless network adapter. I've taken the liberty and found one for you. It is not the most expensive and it is not the cheapest. The reason I did it was to ensure 1)you got it from a reputable dealer 2) you got one that met all of the specs. For instance it must be 802.11bg compliant and it must have 128encryption WEP key for security. The website is www.tigerdirect.com and the wireless card is a Netgear WG311 PCI Wireless Network Adapter. Just type that model # at the search engine of the website and it will come up. And no I don't get a percentage of there sales :)...but I have bought a lot from them and it is always decently priced and good quality.

Hope this helps. Don't forget to rate 4 stars on this solution before checking out.

I have netgear wpn824 wireless router and it works fine until I try to connect to my work server through their Sonicwall VPN. If I unplug the netgear and go straight into my computer through the DSL modem...

Two routers on two different sets of internal IP addresses will cause all kinds of conflicts. A VPN router is even worse. VPNs (virtual private networks) are designed to create encrypted tunnels between two computers. The computer its set to connect to must be authorized either as a user or a device with proper credentials. If your VPN authorizes devices based on MAC addresses, then unless your router's MAC address was previously authorized, youre not going to connect. Lets take the router out of the equation for a second. Do you have a working broadband connection from the sonicwall that the router can be plugged into? If you do, then you can treat this connection to your router like its a cable modem or DSL. If this connection has manual settings (such as IP address, default gateway, and primary and secondary DNS addresses) you will need these settings too. Post back and keep us updated...

Netgear rangemax wireless router wpn824 how do you connect it and do i need a modem?

You need a modem. Without one you can't use a router. A router transmits an existing netwrok signal wirelessly. Without a source such as a modem from a cable provider a router can't function.

NetGear RangeMax WPN824 Wireless Router (WPN824NAR) Wireless connection drops in and out regularly but frequency of this is unpredictable duration is usually a few seconds. Works find on direct ethernet...

Upgrade the Firmware of the router :
First you should check the version of you WPN824 (v1,v2 or v3). If there are no Version after the model number, it should be a version 1. Download the Firmware of your router given the correct version at this link :

http://kbserver.netgear.com/products/WPN824.asp

This is assuming that other wireless laptops has the same problem onyour wireless router. If other Laptops works great on your wirelessrouter without dropping any wireless connection, then you shouldconsider upgrading the wireless adapter on you own laptop.

***(If you haven't tried connecting otherwireless laptop wirelessly to the netgear, then you should try it firstto be sure that the netgear is the problem)

Steps on how to upgrade Netgear firmware :

  1. Download the correct file depending on your location and unzip the file to a convenient place such as your desktop.
  2. Log in the router at http://192.168.1.1 or http://192.168.0.1 (or www.routerlogin.net ) (Which ever will work)
  3. Default User name : admin / password : password
  4. Click Maintenance > Router Upgrade.
  5. Click Browse and locate the file you just downloaded.
  6. Click Upload. While the firmware is loading, do not interrupt the upgrade process.

***Therouter reboots when the upgrade is complete.
***Tocheck that the upgrade was successful, log in to the router again at http://192.168.1.1and check the firmware version.
