Question about Heating & Cooling

2 Answers

I have a Goodman split model from around the year 2000. It sounds like the compressor tries to come on for about 2-3 seconds and then stops. The green light on the inside portion stays on stead but after a while it blinks continuously in a series of 3 flashes.

The compressor start capacitor may be bad or the compressor it's self is bad and cannot get started...

First look at the capacitor is it "puffed up" (kinda like a shook up soda can) on the top side where the wires connect? this area should be flat were the terminals come out. If so there was most likely a power surge. ie. electrical storm or a brown out. pull off the wire connection cover on the compressor are the wires burnt or not connected? there are terminal repair kits that you can obtain from local ac supply houses like the ones mentioned later. If not see if you can barrow a capacitor tester from some one. The other way would be if you can't barrow one is to just get another capacitor and replace it. Take a picture with your phone or camera before you pull the wires. Most of the condensing units use a split capacitor and are marked accordingly "fan" connects to the fan start wind "herm" connects to the compressor start wind and "c" or "com" which is the common connection that goes to the compressor run wind side of the contractor, red or yellow wires. See what the value of the capacitor is look for some thing like "35/5 uf 370volt" or "40/5 mfd 440v" if you have a 370 volt one you can use a 440 volt or a 370 volt but if you have a 440 volt don't put a 370 volt one on it. If you try this and it still won't start get one of these "supco spp6" hard start capacitor. there is a schematic on how to attach it to your system...(one wire on the "herm" terminal and the other wire on the "c" terminal other the capacitor) pretty straight forward just turn the power off first!!!
I've used two of these before to get a compressor started most of the time one will do. you can try to get one locally at a "Johnstone supply", CC Dickson, Baker dist or maybe Grainger.
well if that don't work for ya... new compressor time. good luck my friend.

oh the three blinks on the inside unit can be determined by the "flash code" sticker in or on the panel of the unit. most goodman units flashing 3 times indicating a stuck open preasure switch, which is for the heat part of the system.

My Goodman condenser which was recently replaced is making a severe swashing noise when it stops. Like a back flush or something. Need to know if this standard.

Normally if it does not sound right, it is not right. By your discription it sounds like your compressor is having a problem with flood back caused by a txv not metering properly, or an overcharged system. You will need a tech who can determine superheat and subcool for your refrigerant system. Find a tech who can determine these values. Superheat and subcool is normally around 8 -12 degrees. Superheat is the amount of additional heat the refrigerant picks up in the evaporator once it is turned to gas and is needed to keep liquid refrigerant from flooding back to the compressor. Compressor are designed to compress gas not liquid. Subcool is the additional cooling refrigerant undergoes once the refrigerant turns back into into liquid in the conderser. Subcool ensures the refrigerant remains in liquid form until it reaches the metering device. Only liquid suppied metering devices will pass the required amount of refrigerant to achieve the rated cooing or heating rates. If it is liquid flood back, your compressor will be damaged and will need to be replaced. Hope this helps

Open rollout or open fuse on Goodman

the fuse is located in the circuit board in the blower compartment and the roll-out is located in the burner section and can be a reset-able switch style or the one time fuse link style which is a a small silver cylinder and is mounted in a ceramic piece and is held in with one screw. Both of these are mounted around the opening of the your burner assembly near the opening. This will be near the area of the gas valve.

My kenmore side by side refrigator has stopped cooling on both sides, you can here is click like the compressor is trying to run it cliks about 1 or 2 seconds then clicks again like on and off.sounds to me...

if the first three numbers are 106. on the model number it sounds like the start device on the compressor is bad, part number 8201799 and it's around 55 bucks, unplug the machine, remove the bottom back panel, you'll see the compressor, there will be a metal clip, pop it off with a screw driver and then slide the start device off the compressor,if it smells burnt or if you shake it and hear pieces rattling around it's cooked, also there's a timer in the fridge side, when you first open the freezer door the fan should blow,if it doesn't the timer could be stuck in defrost, with a screw driver you can turn the timer until it clicks and it will come out of defrost,if it starts then you have a bad timer that's stuck in defrost, but i'd put my money on the start device if the clicking is coming from the compressor area and it's not starting, let me know how you make out and as long as it's warm unplug it so you don't damage the pins on the compressor

Compressor ?

Sounds like you are over heating the compressor, try cleaning the out door unit coil. Take a hose and blow water through it, be carefull not to bend the fins.

What kind of freon would i need for a goodman cplt24-1a heat pump ? has not cooled the houuse for 2 years now, thought it may have been the compressor as the heating was not working either. But i was told...

R22 but it does not use it it is circulated in a closed loop, if the fan outside is running you may have to pull the brown wire at the split capacitor to see if the compressor is running. Also it is really important that the filters are changed and that the outdoor is clean allowing air to pass through. Turn off power before pulling the brown wire then reapply power for just a second listening for the compressor. If you hear it, turn off power, reconnect fan brown wire. Turn on power and feel if large line is cold to the touch like a good soda can should be around 45 to 55 degrees f. If not cold it need 3 to 4 pounds if the compressor is working which would indicate a leak.

hi, there there are several things to check1 considering that is the replaced unit one is new not mention here, but we can make it possible sometime after replacing unit and run several year the connection on low side loosen connection due to vibration inssufficient support can be done this,if ther is small leak on low mostly not visual air will enter on system and it can cause obstruction on sytem, affect the flaper vavle insid compressor an abnormal function sametime flappering noise, second excessive oil on high side that intermittent bock the expansion or cappilary tube the pressure will intermittenly flow to the system,If possible purgrd the system and recharged again,be sure all fitting are connect properly welded,if persist again, and check for warranty whom who replaced the compressor they should attend to this,.thanks alot
