Question about Fender Pd250 Passport Deluxe 250watt Portable Sound System with Deluxe Speaker Array Pd250

1 Answer

My passport 250 goes into protect mode on occasion. The other night at a gig it would clip into protect as soon as I sent a signal from the mic or guitar. It works fine at home. Is the unit sensitive to input voltage and if so is there a remedie for that? I tried swapping chords and such. All the other equipment works fine in another head.

These seem to be tempermental. I would look for radio frequency interference from nearby transmitter leaking into your guitar cable or mic cable that puts this on the ragged edge of feedback. DO NOT boost highs with the EQ... You can get supersonic feedback that you can't hear, but puts the amp into limiting. Any audio input can start the feedback. These amps are VERY hard to work on due to the packaging. A lot of people have smoked their units and then require repairing.

I use this for fitness classes. After 1or 2 songs -the music starts cutting out the power is still on the passport and i know my ipod is working correctly - what could be the problem ?

How is the iPod connected at the class?

The VIP channel will override the signal if a mic is connected.

Are you using the same cable for dance AND home?

Is the ipod getting interference at the class from a wi-fi signal?

See attachment. It might help. https://classrooms.at.ufl.edu/wp-content/uploads/portable-pa-system.pdf

How to set onboard fx processor

Which clip light on what and what mics are you using?
The small room settings are from 10 so just turn the know to the setting you require and press it, this should set it.

The stadard way of setting up mics is to set the channel gain so the channel clip light just blinks occasionally when you are making the maximum sound you can into the mic.

For effects repeat this process using the aux send FX for each channel you want fx on (turn the rest to 0) and doing a balancing act between these and the aux send fx master so you can only just get the FX clip light blinking occasionally.

Next set your gain/attenuators on the amp(s) so its clip warning can just trigger when you are giving it 0db when you are playing the loudest you ever will.

A mic fading away could be the battery dying (in which case try using phantom power) or if they're radio replace the batteries before each service. If they're wired dynamic mics then it is possible there's some protection circuit somewhere that's reacting to the constant clipping and backing off the amp.

Could a bad cable connection make a fuse blow in my fender passport 250, or cuase any problemmwith ouput from my speakers...?

A shorted speaker cable could cause this... however, what you do is to replace the fuse BUT wire a 150 Watt lamp in series with the power input... This acts as a resetable fuse for testing. If the lamp stays lit, you still have a failure.

APX900: Feedback at seemingly normal playing volumes. I've had this problem playing both indoors and at outdoor venues. I use a Fender Passport 250 sound system and run my guitar through a Digitech...

Make sure the passport speakers are NOT where the guitar can hear them... they need to be toward the audience from where you are. Also do NOT boost the high end frequencies with the EQ. That guitar probably has a hot pickup subject to ambient sound. Beyond this, you might have to use one of the feedback destroyers. If you are using monitors, take the guitar out of them.

We have a Fender P-250 PA system. We get the protect light on when we turn on the system rather than the green power light. We can not get it to operate. Please advise... Gary

Likely there is either a failure in one of the power amps or the power supply. The protect means excess current is being sensed.

You need to take in for repair... these are really hard to work on due to the packaging.

Amp goes into protect mode as soon as switch is turned on. Pasport 250

There is a problem with the internal amp itself. These are extremely difficult to access. Contact Fender for a local authorized service center.

MY Fender Passport P250 went into protect mode. I changed the FUSE at the power supply with a new fuse. Still it is in Protect mode. How to fix this

This needs to go to the repair shop. The protect mode is turned on when either the power supply has a problem or one or both power amplifiers have a problem. These are often blown components.

These units are HARD to work on. To open you have to first remove then front panel before you can remove the back panel that has the power supply and power amps/heat sinks.

Compare repairs of these units to working under an automobile dashboard!

Hint: On startup, use a series 150 wat lamp to limit current while repairing. SInce these use a switching supply operating off the input line, use an isolation transformer for personal safety.

My Fender Passport stays in protect mode.

I have one that has done the same. It is the next smaller size. The power supply fried a toroidal inductor in mine. Frankly, these things are a major pain to work on. You have to usually remove the front panel before you can remove the back power supply and power amp section.

If you have warranty coverage USE IT !!!

The protect feature in mine monitors the power supply load and shuts down the supply if it senses overload. They are hard to work on as you have to bypass the protect to troubleshoot and get to the root cause.

Use the old light bulb in series trick to limit the current.

Fender passport goes in to protect

I had a problem like this that was caused by a short between the two windings of the toroid in the power supply.

The solder blob is probably supposed to be there as there are numerous common ground points.

This unit is miserable to work on....
