Question about Philips Computers & Internet

I have a Philips Freevents X57 Laptop which has a motherboard problem. When I switch the laptop "ON" these are the following symptoms: A) Power Charger in AC/DC Socket without battery: Power LED "ON" B) When switched on the LCD stays blank, the backlight if "OFF" the CPU Fan continuously running. Could someone tell me what might be the problem with the motherboard Nothing on external monitor, thank you for the advice. The fault is on the component. The faulty is not on the BGA (GPU), RAM, CPU. AC/DC Power Supply. I believe it must be one of the following: diode, capacitor, and transistor. I need someone who has fixed the same fault before, to let me know what to look for. Electronics board level (component level) is a hobby of mine and I have all the equipment to repair board level repairs. I am just stuck on this problem.

    I have the right professional tools to do the work even a microscope, pre-heating station with infra red and rework station. Please advise in what I should be looking for and checking. I have done repair on this level before lots of time which is a hobby of mine. The same motherboard is also from Advent 7093 with the EAA-89 model number. The motherboard number which I am trying to repair is DATW3MB18E4 REV. E

    I do not want to test all the component, if you have come across similar faults with an motherboard or even better the same motherboard from Advent 7093 with the EAA-89 model number or Philips Freevents X57 who uses the same motherboard. The motherboard number which I am trying to repair is DATW3MB18E4 REV. E . Do you have the circuit board diagram for this model. I need someone to tell me which component on the board I should replace or just remove.

    Thank you for your reply. I am a qualified technician and I have done the entire standard test and visually inspected the motherboard. My only concern is to fix the motherboard. Do you have the schematic of the motherboard or any experience related these types of faults. The Northbridge BGA is not faulty far as I know.

    I have a Laptop motherboard problem serial number DATW3MB18E4 REV. E. When I switch the laptop motherboard "ON" these are the following has been done and observed: A) Power Charger in AC/DC Socket without battery: Power LED "ON" B) When switched ?ON? nothing on the LCD which stays blank and the backlight is "OFF", the CPU Fan continuously running. There is no fault with the CPU, RAM, Power Adaptor, BGA Northbridge or Southbridge and LCD. Could you tell me what might be the problem with the motherboard. I have connected to an external monitor, there is no signal, it is blank. The fault is on the component. I believe it must be one of the following: diode, capacitor, and transistor, or any IC. I need someone who has fixed the same fault before, to let me know what to look for. I have successfully repaired motherboards before on a board level (component level). I am just stuck on this problem. I do not want to through the motherboard away. I have a few of these motherboard with the same problem.

    There is nothing wrong with battery. If you know from schematics where to look it will be a great help. I need to fix this motherboard rather than replacing them.

Hi,

According to the symptoms of your laptop, it may be the fault of battery. The batteries may not get charged properly. So first check your battery status or replace he battery because according to you there in no problem with power supply. Then again make sure that the RAM is OK, try with a new or good condition RAM. Open the back panel of the laptop and check all the power connector. You have to check all the capacitors by measurement kit to define exact fault. But better to replace the Motherboard.

The board doesn't runs because the northbridge i945pm - the core chip of the motherboard - doesn't work. It's either unpowered (check the power stage circuit directly connected to it) or - much more likely - the chip itself has failed and it will have to be replaced with one recovered from another laptop's motherboard.

    The only thing that would keep the motherboard from booting into the BIOS is the failure of the northbridge - nothing else would cause that. No, i don't have the schematic because there isn't one - the motherboard isn't supposed to be serviceable: if one of the chips doesn't work then the entire board is replaced because there are no replacement parts.

This sounds like a motherboard fault. Try to check the following before we go checking the components built into the motherboard:

- remove all peripherals/components like hdd, dvd and memory and power up
- If you have more than one memory modules try fitting one on either of the slot and power up

If this all fail you can check the diode, capacitors and fuse on the motherboard. Based on what you said, you should be quite familiar testing these components.

If you found that all these components work fine then am sorry to say but you need to replace the motherboard with a new one.

Please let me know with the updates.

If you are definitely sure it is not the Power Supply, RAM, CPU, or GPU, then the most likely components are the capacitors or one of the chipsets. More likely one or more of the capacitors has gone bad. However, fixing capacitors, chips, or resistors on a laptop motherboard can be very difficult. I have done some repair work before but not able to do that kind of soldering on something that small.

    Since you have worked with electronics on this level before then you obviously know that it is almost impossible to determine which component has actually gone bad. You can take two motherboards built exactly the same on the same day one right after the other and do the exact same things with them and they would not react the same way. One may have one capacitor fail while the other has multiple capcitors and resistors fail.

    I apologize for not being able to help you more but after being in Computer support and repair myself for 15 years I still have not seen any computer fail the same exact way as far as electircal components are concerned.

    It will take some diagnostic work with hands on test equipment to find the part that failed.

Possibilities:
* leaking/bad capacitors on the motherboard, not doing their job, i.e., causing voltage fluctuations that the motherboard cannot tolerate;
* dead disk-drive -- cannot boot Windows from a "dead" drive;
* dead CPU -- cannot do anything other than power on/off;
* failing power-supply -- not supplying correct voltages to the motherboard.

Take the laptop to a qualified computer technician, for professional trouble-shooting, and probably a replacement of the motherboard. But, it might be less expensive to "salvage" the disk-drive (and your files) from the laptop, and to buy a new laptop, than it would be to buy a replacement motherboard, and pay for installation.
