Question about John Deere Garden

Open Question

RCS400 John Deere Line Trimmer starts and when you try to increase the speed it starts to speed up but then slows down. I cleaned the spark filter screen, changed the gas, checked the spark plug and now it starts and then stalls and will not restart.

SOURCE: john deere runs then stops

I fixed my mower stalling issues on the L111 by loosening the gas cap. I ultimately drilled a hole in the gas cap and screened the hole. Sounds ridiculous but without that venting the engine would run approximately 20 mins and die. It was also much more difficult to start the next time. Something else to pass along to whomever might view this... I replaced the cranking battery with a battery that had allot more cranking amps and I no longer had hard start issues ( this was after I vented the gas cap). Hope this helps.

SOURCE: John Deere 445 Garden Tractor, starts immediately,

could be bad gas, but it sounds like a choke problem. did it sit over the winter with less than a half tank of gas in it. try putting some rubbing alcohol in the fuel or draining the tank and disconnecting the gas line so you can drain the gas out of the carb. also check the gap of the spark plug and make sure that is correct. when was the last time there was fresh oil put in. also check the air filter, it could be full of dirt.

SOURCE: John Deere will not start.

If you have gas running down to the carberator ( take the fuel line off and make sure there is gas running to it or there may be a screen or filter plugged by the tank or on the way to the carb) if there is gas there the problem lies in the carb itself. If you have some mechanical ability you should be all right as it is not rocket science. If you are comfortable with taking the carb apart the first thing i would check is the needle vavle. With the carb apart you will see a big brass looking thing this is the float, right above that is the neddle valve, that is the first place they seem to stick on me. Move the float up and down if the neddle above it doesn't move or sticks there is your problem. Spray it with carb cleaner and see if it moves freely. You may have to dismantle the carb to get it to work freely. If it won't buy a carb kit and install all the new gaskets needle valves and jets ( this is a very good ideal any how) Also make sure any little ports in the carb are open ( in the bottom of the carb there may be tiny little holes that are plugged) find a very small wire to clean them with and also make sure when you are done you can spray carb cleaner thru them. This is why they have a small straw on the can with it ( watch your eyes and wear safety glasses as you never know where it will spray out from) That stuff will dry your skin out fast so don't get it in your eyes and you may want to wear rubber gloves. Also be very careful when putting back together as there are little pieces that like to slide around and fall out or may get bent even worse you don't want them in your motor. Also try to count every screw you turn as these are jets and you will want to put them back to the place they were set at cause it's a pain to get them set right by adjusting them later. Do not force anything putting it back as you may bend the jets or float and you will have to take it apart again and replace them as well. Take your time and be patient and you will be just fine

Testimonial: "thanks...you gave me encouragement to give it a try. I took off the shroud, air cleaner box and couldn't take off the carb as there are no heads on the four bolts that hold it on. Looks like it was designed not to be removed? I took off an inspection plate on top of the carb and cleaned all of the channels and ports within with carb cleaner and compressed air...still no gas flowing thru carb...unless I force with compressed air. Any other thoughts? It is a twin cylinder OHV B/S. Thank you. "

May I suggest checking along the fuel line and its attachments for a very minor air leak. The minute it sucks air it will stop. Check any rubber washers or O rings too.

The trimmer starts and idles fine but when you attempt to rev it up to cut, it slows down and stalls.

check the fuel filter in the tank, check that the cap is free of debris in the vent hole, as its idling, and you try and increase the rpms' adjust the high run screw out a 1/8 turn at a time until it achieves the desired speed, Clean the air filter

I had a similar problem lasy year.
Try this:
As soon as the machine seems to be stalling, loosen the gas cap.
If the engine continues to run, clean the gas cap vent hole(s).

Very high likelihood you have fuel line problems. Disconnect primary fuel line from bottom of fuel filter and blow compressed air back up the fuel line to the gas tank. This will clear the line of any trash. Reconnect fuel line to filter. Then remove spark plug and spray a couple of sprays of WD-40 into the cylinder.. Re-install spark plug and then restart. WD-4- will act as a starter fuel and will start the engine for enough rounds to get fuel pump to working to normal run.. Good luck.

My toro gas trimmer does not have power, when squeez for more gas it will slow down even moreand stall on me. will restart but not enough power to wack weed.

Make sure the air filter is clean and that the sparkplug is gapped correctly and not dirty. Try putting it on choke slightly and see if you can increase the speed with the trigger. If you can't the muffler is probably dirty. You have to take the spark arrester off the muffler and clean it with a wire brush.

40:1 fuel to oil should work fine if you use a modern synthetic saw oil available from home centers, hardware stores, and saw dealers. Be sure to premix in it's own container and to shake the container thoroughly each time just before filling the tank to prevent oil starvation. Make sure the fuel filter, air cleaner, and muffler are not plugged. Inspect the fuel lines for decay or other damage. Hope this helps!

I had the same symptoms, after bumping the corner of my house - slow drive speed, actually slow rotation of engine. Tried cleaning air filter, replacing drive belt, spark plug; no difference. Took to JD today figuring it was the carb. They went to a piece of the linkage under the shroud ahead of the air filter; a piece must have been bent. I did not see closely enough to know exactly what, but perhaps it will be evident upon inspection.
