If frost is on the back wall you have a defrost problem, bad defrost thermostat, heater or depending on your model a bad timer or board.also when you open the freezer door you should hear the evap. fan blowing around, this is what blows the cold air from the freezer to the fridge section.a common problem with bottom mount refrigerators is the door doesn't close all the way, warm air gets into it and then the air ducts freeze up and the fridge is warm.if this was the problem you would have ice on the ceiling, frozen water droplets on the packages and maybe ice on the top of the door where the air was getting in but if it's on the back wall it's a defrost problem.you have to remove everything out of the freezer, remove the door and basket, then remove the back inside wall of the freezer, either put the machine into defrost,if it has a timer advance it or if it has a board you can pull off the bottom kickplate and there should be a tech sheet,it will tell you how to put the machine into defrost,if the heater doesn't come on you'll need a meter to see what part is bad, also you need to melt all the ice off of the evap coil and check the parts.if you send the model number i can look up your machine and see what parts are in it and i can help you out better

I'm having the same problem. Model number is Maytag MBF1956HEB. Got the heater to kick on by manually defrosting it. Just don't know where to go from here!

I am having the same problem! My model number is Maytag MBF1956HEB. I got the heater to kick on by doing a manual defrost and now I it's getting cold in the fridge. I think it's more of a temporary fix though. How do I know if its the time/control panel or the thermostat?

hi dana,i think the door was left open,if you manually put it into defrost and the heater did come on then everything is working correctly, also if you had a defrost problem one defrost setting wouldn't take care of it,the problem with bottom mount freezers is that if a package or something is in the way the door could be open enough that the gasket isn't touching the frame, warm air is sucked into the freezer and you can't see it because the top doors block your view, the warm air and cold air mix in the air vents and ice forms blocking the air ducts and cold air can't be blown up into the fridge from the freezer evap fan,i would put it back into defrost or shut down the machine, get a hair dryer and blow the hot air into the back inside wall of the freezer through the air slots, this will melt out any more ice that could be up in the ducts,if there is ice up there you will see it dripping down through the slots or if you do put it back into defrost you'll hear the water hissing as it drips down and hits the heater that's under the evap. coil.when you're done open the fridge door or doors and close the freezer door, this way you can see if the door is closing all the way, then open the freezer door again and when it's around two or three inches away from fully closing let it go,the hinges should pull it closed,if not check the tracks for any ice on them or a damaged track but it should close on it's own, also if it doesn't close tightly check to see if any packages are in the way.if this happens again check around the freezer door usually on the top of it,you'll find ice on it where the air was getting through, then look at the ceiling where the light is,if this has ice on it the door was left open again, also your food packages could be covered with frozen water droplets.hope this helps and good luck with your machine.

one more thing,if you ever do put the machine into defrost maually and the compressor is still running the board is bad,if the fan and compressor does stop but the heater doesn't come on then you have a bad defrost thermostat or the heater is bad.it's a good idea to change the t-stat if you have a defrost problem anyway so you can cut the two wires going to the t-stat,wire nut them together, bypassing the t-stat then put it back into defrost,if the heater comes on then you know the t-stat is bad and is the problem, this is if you have a defrost problem.

Re: Tempurature Problems

The thermostat is likely failing intermittently, or the defrost timer could be failing.

Both parts can be tested (and should have been) by the repairman.

The defrost timer turns on and off to let the coils defrost - but if it stays off - can cause the rise in temperature. The thermostat, however, reports the temperature to the timer, so either (or both) could be to blame.

Have them tested.

This is common, your machine needs a new defrost klixon. or it is (the klixon) loose from it's mount. Turning off the mach. gets a good defrost and
all is good for a time.

Whirlpool fridge

3 things can cause this:

1) Inoperable fan in the freezer.
2) Defrost problem (frost build up on back panel in the freezer)
3) Damper inoperable (vent in the fridge section)

Look for these symptoms and let me know what you find.
