Question about Dacor OB36 Gas Grill

1 Answer

Trying to convert from LP to natural gas on my 36" Dacor grill. Is it possible? It is an 06 model and Dacor has told me that it can't be done, but the manual says it comes equiped to handle LP or natural gas. What can I do? Anything?

If Dacor told you it can't be done, don't attempt it. It may have been OK, 5 years ago. But, something may have happened since then (a safety issue), that precludes it now. With that said, I'm sure there others on this site that will tell you it can be done. But, my 15 years experience in the Hearth and Home business, tells me, if the manufacturer says "No", it's not safe to do.

Besides, all you'll gain is convenience of not having to refill the LP tank. But, you'll lose the fast preheating propane provides and hotter flame.

Hope this helped you make the right decision. Happy Grilling!!

How do I convert from liquid propane to natural gas

You need parts from the manufacturer. The gas orifices are different sizes between natural gas and LP gas. If you try natural gas with an LP gas orifice, you will not get much flame. If you use LP gas with a natural gas orifice, you will burn off your eyebrows and possibly other things.

Can I convert a NG Vermont Castings BBQ to Propane. moving and new house has no NG available. Model SCS 5005.

Unfortunately, Peter, for safety reasons, VC grills are not approved to be converted from one gas type to another. Each grill is manufactured, tested and approved for it's specific gas type. Converting it from LP to Natural Gas places all the liability on you, if something should go wrong as a result of the conversion. Further, you would notice a significant change in the heating ability and the lower flame height, when set on high. The reason for this, is that LP Gas burns cleaner and hotter than Natural Gas in an outdoor environment.

I know you would be happy not having to refill the tank, but I think you would really disappointed in the performance of the grill, if converted to Natural Gas.

I hope this helps you and Happy Grilling!! Thanks for choosing FixYa.

I have an LP version of Ultra Chef Elegance 315 grill and need to convert it to natural gas. Napoleon does not sell the kit any more.

Jim, the reason Napoleon no longer sell a gas conversion kit is a matter of safety. None of their grills are approved to be converted from one gas type to another. Which is also the case with 95% of all the grill brands on the market today. Grills are tested and approved for the gas type they represent. Changing the gas type, then puts the burden of liability on you, if something should go wrong.

Most people want to convert them, as a matter of convenience. Not having to deal with refilling the LP gas tank. But, are disappointed with the operation of the the grill, once it's converted to Natural Gas. As, it takes longer to preheat the grill and the flame height of the burners is lower than with LP Gas.
The reason for this is that LP Gas burns cleaner & hotter in an outdoor environment than Natural Gas.

There are no complete conversion kits available. If, in the end, you decide to make the conversion, you will need to piece and part a kit together. And that's not including running a hard line to the grill's location., along with an inline gas shutoff valve and a quick disconnect gas hose to the grill.

I hope this helped you to make the right decision and err on the side of caution and safety.

Thanks for choosing FixYa and Happy grilling!!

Do they make a conversion kit from NG to LP for a Ducane Meridian 32" grill ???....btw, the model has been discontinued.

Unfortunately, there is not a conversion kit available to convert a Ducane/Webber Grill from one gas type to another. In fact, there never has been, to the best of my knowledge.

The reason for this is that each model is tested and approved for a specific gas type. Whether it's Natural Gas or Propane Gas. Attempts to convert them from one gas type to another would then place all the liability on you, if something should go wrong, because of the conversion. Even the Owner's Manual states that.

My best advice, is clean the grill up and sell it to someone who wants a Natural Gas Grill. Use that money to put toward a new LP Gas Grill. That's the safest way to do it.

I hope this helped you and thanks for choosing FixYa.

I cannot find a supplier who can provide an LP to nat gas conversion kit for my 4 burner grill made under the name: Ducane, model # 30400040. Can you assist? Marlin

Perhaps, the reason you can't find the fuel conversion parts is that they are not convertible from one fuel type to another. Ducane/Weber makes both an LP model and a Natural Gas model of your grill, but no conversion kits. Because, as the Owners Manual states "Liquid propane gas is not natural gas. The conversion or attempted use of natural gas in a liquid propane unit or liquid propane
gas in a natural gas unit is dangerous and will void your warranty."

Certainly, you could attempt it, Marlin . But it's not the wise thing to do.

I know this wasn't the answer you may have wanted, but I hope it helps you.

Converting Weber from LP to Natural Gas

On the weber model you need to purchase the natural gas model. It will cost you alot more to buy all parts needed to convert. Weber doesnt want you to convert do to safety reasons. This is why they will only tell you you can't convert. Buy the right grill and save yourself a headache.

Jenn Air 740-0141 LP to NG Conversion

If the grill can be converted, it's usually a matter of providing a source for the natural gas and then changing the gas jets for the burner(s) and possibly a regulator, depending on your model. Some grills may require changing the gas burner valves themselves. Kits are usually available from a dealer unless the unit is old.

The natural gas jet will be slightly larger than the propane jet because natural gas doesn't have as high a heating value as propane.

If you do this, check your new conversion for any leaks using a soap solution in a spray bottle.

Just be aware that the grill may not get as hot with natural gas and cooking could take a little longer, but should still work just fine.

Your natural gas line should typically be about 1/2" unless it's huge or is over 50-60 feet away from the grill location. If so, use a 3/4" line. Piping material and methods are usually governed by your local building codes.

Propane to Natural Gas Conversion

on the regulator there is a 1/2" nut, made of aluminum. loosen the nut, thur it around and screw it back in, there is a "NAT" on one side, and a "LP" on the other side, make sure the "LP" is facing out if you are using propane, and "NAT", if you are using Natural Gas. Very simple, all you need is a 1/2" wrench, or a small adjustable wrench,
