Question about Dell Inspiron 6400 Notebook

Hello :) I've had a few issues (?symptoms?) going on. After SP2 my registry went kaplooey and I'd been having trouble starting some of my programs, because for some reason windows couldn't find some of the stuff. But recently 2 of the programs are now working (magically, trust me ^^) and one of those is Dell Support Center. But at the same time my computer started slowing down a 'LOT' and when I did the Dell Check, the first time it told me there was a hard drive error and that I'm going to need to replace it. But when I went to try to do another scan and find out what the problem was, it'd freeze the whole computer. Repeatedly. Then the computer would start to do a scan before I could get to windows and it'd be telling me there was issues with some of the sectors. Then (lol yeah I know -.-) earlier today it was replacing some files or something when it was booting up.. But I've still not been able to find the issue. I did a boot scan via disk and it told me that there's an 2000-0146 error. But there's no error lights on my CPU which I find odd. But anyways after I did the boot scan and it told me that issue I kept having to restart the computer because it wouldn't go past the blinking white line... And one of those times it did a scan again on its own (a different one) and it said it'd tell me what the error was after it was done but I didn't get a message...but it did restart and now I'm back on the computer. Haven't checked it's speed/lag issue yet but at least I'm this far. I went to BIOS set up (restart your computer and hit F12 when the BIOS screen comes up), went to onboard devices and changed the SATA Operations from ACHSI (don't know how it got there) to the factory default setting ATA. Then I started up in "repair mode" (which was an option that was coming up when I tried to boot up before but never worked) - it went through a repair check and went to login screen. Prior to finding this - I tried several things including start up from the Reinstallation disc, but nothing worked. I was ready to buy a new hard drive, but don't have to. Works fine! Not sure what caused the problem to start with. It is an "Inspiron 1520" Now I'm not sure about any of this (Mine is a XPS420 btw) but wanted to ask. And if it is a physical issue (praying it's not, as finances are very very limited) what would I need to do to fix it? Thank you very much in advance <3

An error 2000-146 means an IDE device failure. You can still try run a full format or even a low-level format to make the hard drive usable, but this would only extend the life of the drive for a little while. I have seen enough 146 hard drive errors in my 3 years at Dell to know that you can't trust this drive anymore to hold your data. The good thing is, hard drives are getting cheaper by the gigabyte. Check online for good prices on hard drives. Hope this helps.

My recommendation is to format your computer and reinstall the operating system, which is Vista the most problematic operating system I ever work. If you want to save your data. Download Ubuntu, burn the image to a CD or DVD. Boot your computer from the CD or DVD with Ubuntu. You will have access to your hard drive and copy your data to a pen drive or any other media.
If you want to check your hard drive. The majority of hard drive manufacturer have check programs to verify your hard drive for errors, just check the brand of your hard drive and go to the website to download the program.
But for me is your operating system is mess up.

Won't start, battery good, starter good, swapped relays and still won't start


Any issues with the ignition switch itself? They are mostly made of plastic pieces. With the exception of the actual cylinder. Also depending on how long you had the battery issue,it may have damaged the alternator. They tend to go hand in hand,unless caught early enough. The alternator gets overworked due to the weak battery.

I assume you've already tried pressing F8 on startup to get into the start-up options screen (from there you can attempt "Restore System to a previous date.").
If you can't get anywhere with the F8 options, try starting up your system from a Windows Install disk. (Unfortunately, few computers come with this. Some have a Restore mode using either a special startup hot key or a set of optical disks, but this usually involves formatting C: and wiping out everything before setting it back to factory original state.) Once you have the Windows Install disk going, watch for the Automatic System Repair option to come up. This is different for each version of Windows, so I can't give you more than that other than to follow the on-screen instructions.
Note: virus infections can disrupt the hardware registry and produce the symptoms you have. By now, your backup registry is corrupted (that is why the automatic repair fails). I've found the easiest virus fix for a desktop computer is to remove the hard drive and install it as a second drive in a known-good computer, then have that system scan the problem drive for virus infections and file system corruption. If you have a 2.5" - 3.5" drive adapter and can remove the drive easily, you can also use this tactic on laptop hard drives. You will probably still need to repair the operating system damage.

Failure to start. then will start next day. Mazda said it was fuel pump. They replaced $790.00. did not resolve problem. they kept 2 days and said it was battery. Replaced. @ weeks later same problem.


Well, they probably did put on either a bad fuel pump or should've done the relay.There is also a fuel pump REGULATOR that can cause a lot of trouble. Make them keep at it,since their work should be warranteed when they say they've fixed it. don-ohio

Your monitor problem is causes by the power supply. What is happening is the power supply voltages are not stable, just enough to power the unit up. When you connect it to a video signal the power demands slightly increase and the power supply can't handle it. This is a very common problem with LCD after a few years of use. The issue with the power supply is the capacitors have started to fail. These parts are used to filter the output voltage and when they start to fail the outputs start rippling hence the problem you are having. How can i get activation key of windows xp sp2


First, click "Run..." on your start menu, type "regedit" and press enter.
The Registry Editor opens up, and you are presented with a long list of keys on the left.
Browse through the list to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\WPAEvents.
On the right, you should see a stringz value named OOBETimer.
This is the activation stuff. If you change it, Windows will change it back within a few seconds.
Whatever its value is, change it to FF D5 71 D6 8B 6A 8D 6F D5 33 93 FD.
After you've changed it, right-click WPAEvents and choose "Permissions..."
Under "Permissions..." for WPAEvents, Go into the Advanced settings.
UNCHECK "Inhereit from parent the permission entries that apply to child objects. Include these with entries explicitly defined here"
When prompted what course of action to take from here, click "COPY"
From there, Highlight the SYSTEM line, and click edit.
Deny all options, apply, and run a free copy of windows.

this case .you have to check compresion of all piston first then compair it before you go out to ignition coil . exhaust and intake valve have lose compresion may be in piston 3 . check spark plug No.3 have oil or not complete burn . make sure compresion is ok then check igniton coil .and injector if same modle . but i don't think exhaust have eny problem and if there is it will be for all misfiring not only No.3 check some time comes when lose vacum .

When i open picasa i get an error like Runtime Error! program:c\program files\google\picasa3\picasa.exe R6002 floting point support not loaded please help me about it


Here is the problem and the (weak) solution:

You install picasa 3 and run it. It works.
Than you close it and start again (or restart computer) and you receive the error:
R6002 floting point support not loaded
I've uninstalled picasa 3, cleaned my registry with CCleaner, downloaded the picasa 2 and it worked.
Maybe it will work without cleaning the registry.


I use windows XP SP2. To fix the problem I've also tried upgrading to SP3, but it didn't work.
I think it has something to do with hardware, because I have installed the same copy of windows on 2 computers and picasa 3 works on one of them.

First make sure usb cable connected to harddrive is working fine. try it in different usb ports. Press windows key +R key so you can see run then type in run "devmgmt.msc" then press ok so you can see device manager uninstall all usb drivers then it automatic install usb drivers. then check. Also you need to change registry for that type in run "regedit" then press ok then you can see registry editor then locate below key. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11 CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} And remove upper filter and lower filter.Then restart computer then check. Also locate the below key and make sure it's value is 3 not 4. HKLM\system\currentcontrolset\services\usbstor make sure start value is 3 not 4. Let me know if you need further assistance. Im using windows xp sp2 and my startup is incredibly slow. im using alienware themes and alienware dock starts on startup.other than that ive changed the startup tune to something i converted on my own....


Sounds like you are running out of ram for the program. Try upgrading to some more ram in your system. Windows xp recommends minimum 512k of memory to run.

Solution button: Check Registry This code means that the registry returned an unknown result. To resolve this issue, follow the recommended solution, which will run Scanreg.exe. If this does not resolve the issue, type "scanreg /restore" (without quotation marks) from a command prompt. Finally, remove the device from Device Manager, and then redetect it using the Add New Hardware tool in Control Panel. Hope this help's ;)
