Question about Nintendo DS Console
By what you are describing and the smell of "party poppers" this is sounding very much like the lithium battery is on its way out and leaking. The smell that you are describing sounds like the Sulphur Dioxide is leaking from the battery.
Alternatively, there could be an internal component that has fried inside the DS itself.
For safetey purposes I wouldn't use the DS until you have checked the DS with another working battery to see if it makes a difference in gameplay and freezing. The reason i'm telling you not to use the DS with it's own battery is beacuase some lithium batteries have been known to catch fire and sometimes blow up.
The leakage may not be visible to the eye but remove the battery and check around the battery housing on the DS for any moisture.
If there is anything else you would like to know please post back.
Hope this helps!!!
