When a Microsoft Xbox 360 console experiences a "general hardware" failure or "core digital" failure, three flashing red lights appear (known as the "Red Ring of Death") around the power button, in lieu of the four green lights indicating normal operation. Warning signs may include freeze-ups, in which the screen has strange, spontaneous graphical problems in the middle of gameplay, such as checkerboard or pinstripe patterns on the screen, the sound is frozen and changed to a strange, static-like sound, and the console only responds to pressing the power button to turn it off. These events may happen once or several times until the general hardware failure occurs, when the user attempts to turn the console on, and the three red lights are seen and the console will not function.
this sounds like it will error e74 which will need a reflow
but dont overheat with a towel as this will cause more problems
I tried this, it might seem pretty basic, but i know why the xbox keeps freezing, it overheating, if your Xbox is NOT having three red lights then it's nothing major, simply unplug it all and put it near a window for a few hours. If you DO have the three red lights it's a serious problem, i'm sure microsoft would love you to send it off to them while you get charged and wait six weeks, but you could just fix it yourself in less than an hour! simply follow a step-to-step guide :)
The three flashing red lights may indicate that there is a hardware problem with your Xbox 360 console. The main thing that causes the 3 red lights to start flashing is because of overheating and as the motherboard within the console takes more heat it actually warps and bends until the solders become loose.
Once this happens you will receive the 3 red lights. Even before you get the 3 red lights you may have noticed your games freezing and this is caused in the same way, by overheating. As the chips take more heat they shut off to prevent lasting damage, although they can only do this a number of times until you get the Xbox 360 3 Red Lights.
To fix the problem you need to stop the level of heat the motherboard takes and you can do this in a number of ways, but it will involve opening up your Xbox and working on it. In addition, you could always send your Xbox back to Microsoft as they are offering free repair for this error, you will just need to wait 3-4 weeks that’s all.
Call 1-800-4MY-XBOX. All XBox360 consoles have a 3-year limited warranty protecting against the 3 red lights. Since the XBox360 hasn't even been out for three years yet, yours should still be under warranty and will be replaced for free.
If it isn't working anyway then yes. If you have voided the warranty by opening the console - which I believe you need to do to flash the drives firmware - then they may reject it, but will still send it back. If the latter becomes the case, find a local game repair shop.
