Question about Whirlpool Duet 7.0 Cu. Ft. Super Capacity Plus Electric Dryer

1 Answer

I have a five year old dryer, recently moved and changed to a 4 wire plug. It has correct voltage all the way to the machine but the display only has two faint red lines and all the lights that are on are only half lit. What could be wrong?

Samsung Dryer Issue

Is this Dryer in the US? It sounds like it may be as you are refering to a Phase Voltage of 120 volts and a Line Voltage of 240 v.
therefore it sounds like your machine is 3 Phase and in the past you have been wired as 3 Phase and Neutral (4 Pin), it could be that your 3 pin socket at the new location is only 3 Phase ( no Neural ) in which case you may have applied twice the voltage to the control circuit which should be only 120 volts in your case, check on the PCB of the control circuit for any fuse which may have operated, otherwise there may be power supply issues due to applying over voltage in the absence of a Neutral :-(

How to connect a dryer

Hi Sheliah,

I'm an electrician and would like to help you. Assuming you're in the U.S. and this is an electric dryer (not gas), you will need to find a 240 (a.k.a. 250) volt / 30 amp circuit to connect it to for it to work. This would be connected to a double pole 30 amp circuit breaker in the electrical panel. There is no simple residential "adapter" to change voltage, current or number of wires - besides the old 3 wire grounding plug adapter in you grandmother's junk drawer. (What is a 50/250 volt dryer? - did you mean a 30A/250V?)

Your dryer should have a 4 wire cord with a 4 prong plug on the end - and it will need to be plugged into a matching outlet. The old electrical code allowed you to change the cord to match the outlet, but now it requires that both the cord and the outlet be a 4 wire type. The old 3 wire cord type is no longer permitted to be used when the dryer is moved or replaced. Of course, 3 wire cords are available everywhere and it is unlikely that anyone will turn you in for changing the dryer's 4 wire cord back to a 3 wire cord type (but I just wanted to tell they way it is supposed to be done). What you do - is your business.

If you have a gas (or LP) dryer, you probably only need a 120 volt / 15 or 20 amp outlet - they look like the standard types - but I think you'd have simply plugged it in and walked away if that were the case.

I hope this helped!

Hi joecci,

It looks like the Door Lock may be faulty, but here is a few things you should consider looking at first:

1) Is the door closed properly?
2) Have you tried giving it power straight from the mains, the door lock needs the correct power before it functions correctly?

I believe one of the above things will resolve the problem, let me know if it does?

Regards

Dryer is 2 years old. Worked fine until we moved to a new house and could not hook it up. 1 year later I finally had the electric problem fixed and hooked the dryer up No Heat. Dryer turns on but NO Heat.

is the outlet 3 or 4 prongs?. voltage check the outlet for propper voltage. check connection at dryer power cord. 2 of the wires power the motor circuitry(120vac) the other 2 the heating element. you may have a loose connection in outlet, switch wires or bad-half trip breaker. if not,,,, there's a dryer problem, call us again with update please. good luck to you.

I moved into a house that has the 4 prong dryer receptacle and I bought the new 4 prong plug to hook up to my dryer but there are only 3 wires on my old one. The new one has a red, green, white and a black...

be careful the voltage may be different thats why they make them with different plug configurations. check your dryer voltage requirement. usually the four wire type are for 250vac electric dryers.

Brand new roper dryer, was working fine, moved it to a different house, had to change from 3 wire to 4 wire cord, now it runs but no heat. have 110 on black, 110 on red, all components ohm good

the wires may not be hooked up right. make sure the red goes to red, black to black, white to white.and the green one screwed to the groung screw.

i have had this problem where all the components check out good and the power was correct, and the unit would still not heat, the end problem was the wiring from the main breaker box was incorrect and not carrying enough current to operate the machine properly.you may have to have the wiring check for proper current flow.the voltage maybe good but the amps and current may not be porper.
if you have a electric stove with the same kind of cord you can move the range out and plug your dryer in there just to check the operation of the dryer.

I need to change the 3 wire plug on my whirlpool model LE5790XS dryer to a 4 wire plug...old one is not color coded and I dont want to hook it up wrong...whats the correct way to connect this plug?

To install your 4 wire plug ,the white wire goes to the center wiring terminal on the dryer. The green ground wire attaches to the terminal cover screw outside the dryer. The red and black wires go right and left on the dryer terminal.
