The firmware update for the Lexmark Pro901 will help fix this problem. Visit the Lexmark website at http://bit.ly/p905fwto download and install the update. Running the "Deep Clean Printhead" maintenance will also help.

If you continues to experience print quality issues even after updating your printer, it could be due to a faulty printhead. Please contact Lexmark Technical Support Center or visit Lexmark’s website for additional assistance.

Random "grey/light grey blotches" is an attribute of a fautly printhead. Lexmark recognizes that some of our inkjet all-in-one customers may be experiencing issues with their print quality.  We take our customer user experience very seriously, and we strive to ensure that each time a customer prints using a Lexmark device the page is crisp, clear and up to the highest standards.

However, if your device is displaying a ‘printhead error’ on the hardware and/or you are suddenly experiencing a print quality issue, please contact the Lexmark Technical Support Center at 1-800-539-6275.

Lexmark agents are prepared and able to help diagnose and resolve your issue. This may involve updating your printer firmware and/or replacing the printhead for your printer, at no charge to you, our customer. Installation is quick and easy for any customer to perform.

Hi Paul.
I don't have a Xerox, but my previous HP and Samsung and current Samsung have on-screen Windows-configurable settings for adjusting darkness etc.
Open Start>Control Panel>Printers and Devices
Right-click the XEROX icon and choose Settings.
Browse through the menu pages until you see a page with similar to the screenshot.
May be called Advanced.
Darkness should be normal, or if still showing, try light.
ECO mode should be On.
That fact that other printers are not printing the noise means that the current user-settings of your XEROX are too dark, thus reproducing the pixels of the signature graphic.
If you selected a pixel near the signature and analysed it in MS Paint, you'd probably find that the 24-bit RGB value is not pure white 255.255.255 but maybe a few steps darker, say 254,254,254.
To the human eye this would be hardly noticeable, but the printer may be darkening the pixels even more, causing the noise.
I wish you luck in your noiseless quest.
Clive.

It sounds like you have leaky toner or the imaging drum needs to be replaced.

Dell 1815dn laser printer prints completely black pages

1. Charge – Print Quality (PQ) -- The charge roller evenly distributes a negative charge on the photoconductor (PC) drum. This evenly distributed charge acts as the film that is discharged (exposed) by the laser to create the latent image.
a. Print Quality effected: Faint, Entire Black background, Grey Fog/Haze
b. Parts Involved:
i. Drum -- A drum cartridge is coated with a photoconductive material that allows electricity to pass when exposed to light. As an example of why this can be the failure, if you leave a drum out in light long enough, you will get dark backgrounds or just black pages. However, drums do wear out over time too; specifically the photo material the drum is coated with. As this degrades, more of the positive electricity on the inside of the drum gets through and grabs toner, as if the laser wrote to every square inch of it. A damaged or defective PC drum can cause black streaks/lines, voids, speckles and various other print quality problems.
ii. Charge Roller Also known as the BCR or Bias Charge Roll. The charge roller pulls double duty. It energizes the outside of the drum with negative energy and as a result it cleans any previous latent images. If the charge roller were failing to energize either due to the HVPS or the charge roller itself, it wouldn’t clean any previous unused toner deposits from the last revolution would start to accumulate and appear on paper more and more causing haze. A missing charge roller causes completely black pages.

iii. HVPS – High Voltage Power Supply -- Responsible for charging components such as the inside of the drum, the charge roller, and transfer roller. If the HVPS does not give enough to the charge roller it can fail in erasing the drum, causing entirely Black pages to be printed.

Grey background over entire page.

If toner is getting onto the transfer belt, it can only get there by either being put there intentionally, or leaking.

Failure of Transfer Belt is normally degraded print quality - usually poor density, or a failure of the support behind the belt (usually puncturing the belt), and scoring a drum.

Half the page is dark grey

Low toner.
Consider how often you print.
If you print more than twice a day, toner will tend to run low after half a year, so I would buy a replacement cartridge and see if this solves your issue.
They aren't terribly expensive, so it is worth a shot.

Change out the toner first and then the drum. Also be sure there is not excess toner underneath where the toner is installed. If so clean that out with a dry cloth.
