Question about Bosch 4000 - 07 Electric Table Saws

1 Answer

Bosch 4000 DIY 5-6 years old - My saw was working fine and then slowed up, I turned it off and the blade would not move freely, and I did smell a little burn. I took it to a Bosch service, and they told me they couldn't get the armature out and it would cost me $430 for a new motor. I am willing to work on it, to see if I can fit it, if you have some advice.

The reason they couldnt get the armature out is the field has probably melted around it a little. BUT not to worry. Remove the motor housing and with the assembly remove the brush caps. Turn the fan slightly and you will see 2 usually phillips screws that hold the field in the motor housing, remove them and then you can GENTLY tap the armature and field out of the housing, after you get it out a bit you will have to remove the wires from the field to the brush holders. After removing inspect the motor housing for damage from the heat. You will have to buy a new field and armature, and brushes. When replacing the armature make sure to replace the bearings. If you need any more assistance let me know and I will try and help.

Bosch 4000 table saw motor does not turn, very stiff

Possibly something has jammed inside the motor housing although unlikely.
Electric brake seized perhaps?
Carbon brushes need replaced?

These saws (and the newer 4100) have a history of motor problems, with the field winding and electronic motor speed control being the most common points of failure. If you go to an online tool parts supplier like toolpartsdirect- Bosch 4000 saw you will see a list of the parts available, as well as the most commonly ordered parts.

Bosch 4000 table saw tripped breaker. Went to turn saw back on and no power. I replaced the speed control board and still no power? I checked the switch and is fine. Any ideas?

Remove the cap on the end of the motor and remove the 2 carbon brushes. (Ensure the brushes move freely in the tubes and contact the armature)
Remove the 4 screws holding the motor housing to the frame and pull it straight off. Check the copper commutator on the armature and make sure it is not burnt.

Just replaced speed control unit and saw still spins at very slow rpm, guessing 20-30. any other possibilties. any way to check if new control unit is no good?

With the saw unplugged, turn the saw blade.
If it turns easily with no hangups I would guess its the field.
When mine went bad the blade went backwards very slowly.
I replaced only the field and not the armature and it's worked fine for over 2 yrs.

Right now I have it apart to change an armature bearing which was completely frozen up.

My Bosch 4000 table saw stopped in mid cut yesterday.now when i switch it on it makes a sound like the blade is stuck except the blade is completely clear and turns freely by hand.after a couple of seconds...

try checking the brushes in the motor. maybe they need to be replaced. i would ask how old is the saw and how hard has it been used? it could be an end bearing that has burned up.

Saw blade seems to be seized, it is hard to turn manually.

could be a couple problems, first is the inner flange on correctly. and if so remove the blade UNPLUG SAW FIRST and see if you can turn the spindle by hand, it should spin freely, if not then you have a bearing problem or possibly the motor is burnt. did you notice any burning smell last time you used it and if so that is it. Let me know

Rowdy, The blade seams stuck. It wont spin freely even . I took out the blade and inspected the spindle. I didn't see anything that looked out of place. the motor turned hard without the blade attached....

check the bearings, especially the commutator bearing for seizing up, this is a common problem for the table saws. Let me know the exact model number and if you have a bearing puller you can fix this easily. if not most shops won;t charge much to pull and press on new bearings.

My Bosch 4000 table saw blade spins very slow. What the problem would be?

could be bearings locking up/seizing or do you smell any burning when running indicating the armature/field are burnt from possibly overloading with a dull blade.

Smoking

Couple things I would look for first the condition of the blade do you see any buildup around the teeth like something has burnt on it. Also look into the area around the blade under the table (unplug saw first) to make sure that something hasn't dropped into it rubbing blade causing smoke. Also turn the blade by hand to make sure turning freely. The smoke could possibly be coming from a bearing. If it less than a year old Bosch has a pretty good warranty and you might look into that also. Let me know and I will dig deeper into it.
