SOURCE: key sign on appearing on
This is the child lock. It prevents the buttons working.
Press and hold the 'MENU' button for until the symbol disappears (about 5-6 seconds)
You can activate it the same way once the cycle is going thus preventing accidental changes to the programme.
Annoying until you know how, but useful when you do.

SOURCE: Screen display problems when running Adventures in Typing
I bought this for my daughters back in 2000. Now I find my mother wants to become a silver surfer and she would like to learn how to type letters. I tried using Adventures in typing on her laptop and saw that there were compatability issues. After a lot fo experimneting I found asloution that works every time and is as simple as can be. this is what I did (and printed out for my Mum:-)
Hi Mum :-)
Video problems with Adventures in typing with Timone and Poomba
There are compatibility issues with Windows Vista and this program
To overcome these problems we need to force windows Vista to use an
older Video format (from the days when the program was first published).
A short cut has been created and placed on your desktop.
The compatibility (properties) on the short cut have been set to –
To create the short cut –
Place the CD-rom in the Disc bay and hold down the Shift key while the the CD-rom boots up. This prevents Autorun.
Now use Windows Explorer to look at the files and folders on the CD-rom.
Look for the Setup.exe file.
Right click on it to create a short cut that will be placed on your desktop.
Go to the short cut and right click on it to select the properties.
Now change the compatibility to the settings mentioned above.
Remove the CD-rom from the disc bay.
This is how to use the program Adventures in typing with Timone and Poomba on a computer running Windows Vista
Note that steps 1 through to 7 have to be done every time the program is started and stopped.
Click on this shortcut/icon
You will not have to do anything to put settings back to where they should be – Windows Vista will do that automatically.
This is how to stop any program if you are having problems and can not see how to stop it.
Note that using this method is a sort of emergency stop so it will not save any new work you have done on the program/file.
Click once on the Task Manager option

It appears your timer/main controller/CCU has failed in this instance.
For replacement parts - head on over to PartSelect.com or RepairClinic.com and enter in your full model number for a full parts listing.
I recommend both sites because ...
FixYa has no affiliation with either site - I have been using and recommending them for years - trouble free.
PartSelect has a great schematic database for locating the part on your unit and great "testimonials" for each part that often times includes HOW-TO information.
RepairClinic has pictures of each part they sell and also a great how-to and troubleshooting for basic repairs.
If your unit has never been serviced - there should still be an original service manual enclosed in plastic taped to the inside of the shell.
In the service manual are Error codes, maintenance procedures, and troubleshooting steps you can follow.
Anything too complicated or beyond your scope should be handled by a professional.
If you think you want to tackle the repair - and have gotten stuck on a step - reply to your question and I will be glad to help you out.
Thanks for using FixYa - a 4 THUMBS rating is appreciated for answering your FREE question

try cleaning the drum contact on the rear of the machine. It is a carbon brush that contacts the drum spindle. It can get covered in carbon from the brush.Remove the plastic cover containing the contact brush, clean out all carbon dust and lightly sand the drum spindle to remove any surface build-up and ensure a good electrical contact then reassemble.
Make sure that the program controller is working if not check
power - step down supply, the pads are responding- if not faulty pads- or the
door switches, if the switch contact are not good then it will not trigger the
processor to switch on the waveguides. If the lights or fan work without any
display or action of program being triggered to start then it can be a possible
fault on the main board or the processor. Sometimes insect secretion can short
the board and display panel and so the processor can work in such an erratic
manner. If so clean, solder and reset the board. Now identify the parts by
clicking this link: http://www.espares.co.uk/advice/microwave/a/5/141/identifying-microwave-parts.html
If there is no heating
please do not switch on unless you have confirmed the fault. It is possible
that the Magnetron is faulty, the temperature cut off is faulty or the main
capacitor is short. It is also quite possible that insect can get into the oven
and create soft spots. When you switch on these will create a short and make
the voltage jump and in the long run damage the magnetron. Check this link to
