Question about Briggs & Stratton Briggs Stratton Lawnmower Lawn Mower Short Block

I have a Craftsman LT1000 with Briggs & Stratton engine model #311707, type #0125-E1. A stick jammed the blade and the flywheel key sheared. I replaced the key and started the engine at idle speed - it ran fine. When I began to increase the throttle the new flywheel key sheared. What should I look at next? Thanks, Ken

Do you know what the torque value is for the flywheel?

  • ken_weave245 May 24, 2011

Thanks! I hope to reassemble this evening and take it for a test drive. I'll post the results.

Thanks. I'll try it & let you know.

Finally had time over the Holiday weekend to try your suggestion of using some Loctite 660 fastmetal in the keyway. It was the best $12 that I ever spent. Put it back together with a new key & thin coating of Loctite 660 - it runs great. Thanks for the great suggestions.

With no load, the key should NOT have sheared. These are possibilities: The replaced key was the wrong size. It should fit TIGHT with no slop at all and be long enough. A second possibility is that the keyway in either the flywheel or the shaft has been damaged. If the edges have been rolled over that would cause a new key to fail. If the flywheel had not been fully seated that would lead to failure. When re-assembling the unit fully cleaning the taper and the bore of the flywheel AND the keyway is important. A very thin lubricant is needed to insure full mating of the part. Torquing the retaining nut to the specified torque is important and this can be a bit tough. gently tapping the wheel to make sure it is seated can help. At this point disassemble and inspect the parts for damage or gauling that would prevent the taper from seating properly and dress the parts lightly with emery if the surfaces have been damaged. Make sure replacement key fits tight and is the right one.

Here is a site you should read: http://outdoorpowerinfo.com/repairs/flyw...
I could not find the torque spec for that particular engine, but others I saw a 65 ft-lb spec for a 15/16 inch flywheel nut.. When you tighten it, wait a bit and then check torque again as some cold flow could result as parts mate.

If there is any slop in the keyway, get some Loctite that is for the purpose. The real torque is carried by the tapered joint however, so perfect fitup is important.

Glad to hear it is fixed. If there is any slop in a keyway they just pound the key until it shears. I have seen them pounded until they get almost round and the excess metal is squeezed out lengthwise before it shears. Keys have to fit tight say with .001 max gap and Loctite is a good product when perfect fit is not possible. When mower blades hit a rock, the torque of the inertia of the flywheel is tremendous... and that can start the downward spiral to failure of the key.

When you shear a key is can damage the key way and roll the lip check that to make sure it is ok, the key has to set right as will, if it is off it will shear. take your time and make sure there is no play when you put the flywheel on it has to tight or you'll chase your tail. let me know what you find

Get a case harden flwheel key instead. The manufacturer makes these keys from soft metal so the blade will shear the key off when heitting a tree stump or a large rock.
If you have a beautiful manicured lawn a harden key is right for yours

That's odd the key way shooed be tight with no slack in it make sure the bolt is tight and use lock tight (blue) on the blade on the fly wheel Ware the pull starter same thing the key way must be the right one if there is any slack it will cut it right in half

hope this helps you

Briggs & stratton mod. 406777-0115-E1 engine backfires thru exhaust

This is a true tale sign of a valve being out of adjustment or possible burnt or sticking. Most likely its just out of adjustment. Setting them to Book Specifications of: Valve Clearance (cold) IN and EX .005" (0.13 mm) should take care of the problem. Since you said that it runs fine rules out the possibility of a sheared flywheel key, though I have seen one run with it slightly sheared. Thanks; George

Starting trouble

if it's on a pushmower you will have to remove cowling to expose top of crank & flywheel & confirm the key holding the flywheel in place has not sheared. common issue after abrupt stop of blade. If carb problem would need more details on type of briggs. did you check for spark? if you have gas check to make sure float is not stuck closed. sometimes with gum buil up the needle sticks & stops gas flow. i have tapped slightly & been lucky to free but more often have to take apart & clean

Engine won't start and backfires

Did you loosen the coil when you changed the key? Check the setting between the flywheel and the coil. !0,000ths, I think.

Briggs and stratton engine on my lawn mower won't start.

Remove the blade and check the keyway. If the key way has the shear pin still in it it may have been bent and not sheared off. That will cause it to be off timing. I would imagine the valves got bent from the sudden stop of the engine as well
