Each copy of windows is registered to the motherboard it was installed on. So replacing the motherboard as invalidated your copy of windows. You could try ringing microsoft and explain the situation and they should give you a new serial number.

Should I remove Windows Vista on my Compaq Presario Laptop? It is installed as OE but I amm told Microsoft does not support it anymore

For the past few upgrade cycles I have upgraded by purchasing the best value new computers with the OS installed. I connect the old computers to the new via a home network. The newest has Win-7 and is much faster, however, the learning curve is steep getting all the old stuff to work. So for some stuff I still rely on the older machine. This has given me the best results.I still use Vista and XP, but if you feel compelled to upgrade do to security reason I would follow the following outline.
  1. Back up on an external USB drive all important documents. You must do this if not Murphy's rules will apply and it can be a train wreck!!
  2. Down load Acronis from Western Digital website. Make a Boot disk.
  3. Create a clone copy of your master C:/ drive on an external USB drive.
  4. Purchase a same or larger internal PC master C: drive "It must be a Western Digital for the free version of Acronis to work"
  5. Replace current drive with new.
  6. Using Acronis boot disk boot up and connect USB drive
  7. Clone new drive from USB with vista OS using the Acronis boot disk and confirm all is well
  8. You now have a way to go back. Your original drive still has the Vista OS with all your Junk and the new drive should have the same.
  9. Using the new drive go to the Microsoft website and go for OS seven. Keep your clone copy of the vista OS on the USB drive in case the seven blows-up during install.
  10. Retain the original C: drive with the vista OS in case you get into difficulty with the new drive.(mark the drive with date etc)
I have successfully done this for computers and keep a drive loaded with a known good OS for the day it all goes bad.

Sync-toy is the backup program that I use to keep everything up to date.

Hope this helps?

Just bought a new computer and my Dell 720printer does not work? Thank you

If you bought a new computer it probably has Windows 7 installed and the Dell 720 may not be compatible. You can try downloading the Vista drivers from Dell here. They may work with Windows 7. If not, you'll need to replace the printer with a later, Windows 7 compatible one.

Del 380 with light codes 1 & 4. The bios starting bar freezes at 90%. I have desconected all the periferals cards and drives. Same result.

Hi! The diagnostic light that you are seeing refers to motherboard/system board failure. You might need to contact the manufacturer to have it replaced if the computer is still under warranty...hope this helps.

Hardware halfunction

Hi!
This behavior can occur if a hardware component malfunctions, or if there are damaged or incompatible drivers installed. As with VISTA!
To try to resolve this behavior, use the following troubleshooting techniques. Because Windows can display only basic error messages when hardware malfunctions occur, troubleshooting can be difficult. Most equipment problems center around the motherboard, the RAM on a motherboard or on an adapter, or the cache memory on a motherboard or on an adapter.
Remove any adapters that are not required to start the computer and run Windows. In many cases, you can start your computer with only the drive subsystem controller and the video adapter.
Let me know.

Run Activation.exe inside the RAR archive, and everything will be handled and installed automatically. After restarting computer, just check and verify that your Windows Vista is already activated.
N.B. Some Dell computers cannot be activated using VistaLoader version 2.1.3. This is known issue. In this case, try Vista Loader 2.0 (VistaLoaderV2.0.rar).
N.B. Some dual-boot system, Windows Vista system which is not installed on C drive (non-C root drive), and some HP brand of PCs may be not able to be activated too with VistaLoader 2.1.3 or VistaLoader 2.0. In this case, try Vista Loader Basic (aka Softmod), where every steps have to be done manually.

Motherboard blew up

I would recommend buying a replacement computer, and install the Dell IDE drive in an external 3.5" IDE hard drive enclosure. This way you can pull your information off the the Dell hard drive, and then blow it away.

Keep in mind that new computers use a SATA drive, your old Dell '8200 has an IDE drive. Also keep in mind that your Dimension 8200 drivers won't work on the new computer.

You might be able to install your Dell drive as a slave if you have an open IDE channel available.

Good news is, your old Dell uses RAMBUS memory, which is worth a lot. It's a good parts computer, and most people who look for computer parts know of the bad capacitor issue on Intel made Dell motherboards from that era.

Hard drive driver problem

Hi,

It is possible that your hard drive is a SATA and therefore not readily readable by 98, XP but surprised not even by Vista. In any case, since you would still prefer to run XP (due to other software compatibility issues), pls press F6 when prompted by the XP installer. Additionally, you would need to have ready in a floppy the appropriate SATA drivers for your motherboard. They maybe downloaded from the motherboard manufacturer's website or possibly in the installer/driver CD that came with the PC.

Other than the above, it is also possible that you may have some issues with the availability of XP drivers for the other devices for that computer specially if it is branded.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

Recognize the new mother board?

Before you install the new motherboard make sure you have all of Windows updates installed on the hard drive. Microsoft is working hard to include many new devices all the time. You should have no problem booting into Vista after the motherboard is intalled and your motherboard should come with a driver disk to install any drivers that Vista may miss.
