Question about Garden

1 Answer

We inherited a Honda FR750 tiller that had not been used for years. Drained and replaced old oil and gas. Installed new spark plug. Engine would not start, removed air filter and tried starter fluid. Engine fired ran for 5 seconds, repeated with same results. Removed carbuerator, disassembled removed some gunk(not sure of the best way to do this), reassembled-installed with same results as before.

did you pull the spark plug out and clean it ? if you did , did you also put the starter cord and turn the motor over without the plug installed to get rid of the 2-cycle oil out of the cylinder ? if not do so.

WHY GAS GET IN OIL FOR NO KNOWN? WHICH LEADS TO LOSE OF POWER. THE TILL IS 3-4 YEARS OLD.

Gas gets in the oil via the carburetor. Do Not Run It Like This! The fuel acts like a thinner and wipes the oil from lubricating friction surfaces. You can destroy your engine this way.

In the carburetor the float and needle are stuck open. This allows fuel to enter the carburetor and fill it up and back up into air cleaner and down the crank case vent line. To correct you will need to clean the carburetor, maybe replace needle and seat. Change the oil, but be ready for the oil/fuel mix to drain very fast. Check air filter and replace if necessary. Remove the spark plug and turn the engine over several times to get oil back to where is needs to be. Replace plug and start.

I hope this helps, if it really does please rate four thumbs up.

need to check for spark---- magneto [magnet-pulse to coil] may have rust causing failed spark can clean lightly with sandpaper but more than likely u need to clean the carb-buy a rebuild kit about 10 bucks -take off carb tear apart and let soak in parts cleaner use a carb cleaner and spray all the nooks and crannys in carb rebuild replace and try firing up because more than likely the carb is completely gummed up from the old gas

My mother-in-law put gasoline in the oil fill spout. tiller sat like this for 6 months. was not started. I have drained oil/gas, but still can't get to start

This is a new for me. I suspect that removing the spark plug to put a squirt or two of engine oil on top of piston to lubricate and raise the compression would be a good start. Insure that the spark plug is clean and dry and sparking when pulling the starter rope. Reinstall spark plug and try again. If no success remove air cleaner and with choke open and throttle open give a short squirt (1/2 second only) of ether in intake orfice and start right away. If engine wants to fire the carb. is plugged up with old fuel and will most likely need to be cleaned our rebuilt. Note: 6 months in storage with the fuel not drained or at least stabilized is a major cause of small engines that will not start.

Will not start

If you have a spark plug wrench take out the spark plug look at it if it is all wet engine is flooded with gas,dry it and clean it if it is dry its not getting gas, try putting in a new spark plug. is there gas in tank , is switch on, is gas turned off, is the tank full, is the gas old and stinky? has the tiller sat for months carb may be plugged check ,engine oil level, try a little shot of engine starting fluid or gas sprayed into carb needle valve in carb may be pluged, float in carb may be stuck. tap on carburetor good luck

First pull your spark plug out reconnect to the plug wire and ground tot he engine body
Pull the starter cord and see if you have a good clean spark that goes to the electrode and not to the side of the spark plug.
If no spark check your off/on switch

Tiller has sat in weater for a year. I changed the spark plug, and found there was water or gas in the oil (lots of it) i drained the oil and put in fresh but now it wont even start. what is my problem or...

You need a few things for a combustion engine to work. Firstly you are going to need to know a little about engines and how they work.
Fuel - try draining the tank and putting fresh fuel in it - fues does go stale. This will include fuel in the carburetor so that needs drained too. There was liquid, assuming water in the oil, perhaps it is in the fuel too.
Fire - do you get a spark to the spark plug? Pull the plug out and see if you get spark when trying to start - remember the earth of the spark plug needs to be touching the grounded metal such as the engine or frame. Perhaps the electricals have been water damaged.
Air - clean out the air filter and surrounds.
You have already drained the oil and replaced it - good start.
Maybe something has corroded since it has been in the weather for so long.
If it still does not want to start, try pulling out the plug & trying to start - is anything spitting out the spark plug hole? If so, what?
Once that is clean and clear and it still doesn't start but you have spark, try putting a bit of fuel carefully in the plug hole, say half a tablespoon.
How does that go?

Mantis 2-stroke tiller won't start

This could be one of several problems...
• Last year's fuel. Get some fresh gas.
• Every 2-stroke needs a new spark plug each year... you know what that means.
• Clogged carb jets due to storing the tiller over the winter with fuel in the system. Never, ever do that. Now you'll need to pull the carb apart and clean it. Most of the orifices are so tiny you can't see them. Good luck.
• Engine is so old the crankshaft seals have hardened with age. This is one reason no 2-stroke lasts longer than about 8 years. If the seals are shot, then it will cost more to fix than a new one costs. Time to toss it.
