"SE" error means you have a shorted membrane keypad.

The full model number from the tag on the oven should be one of these:

SMH9151B/XAA (service manual)
SMH9151B/XAC (service manual)
SMH9151BE/XAA (service manual)

I've included the service manual link for each one for your convenience. They'll help you with disassembly and in getting part numbers.

You can order parts by entering part numbers or your full model number from the tag on the oven here.

There are three ways you can fix this, with the last probably being the best:

1. Replace the membrane keypad ("switch membrane"). The cheapest way but the hardest. If you (or someone you know) might want to replace it yourself, I have uploaded a handy guide with pictures showing you what's typically involved. It's here.

2. Replace the control panel frame assembly ("assy control panel"), which comes with a new keypad on it already. Pretty easy, not expensive.

3. Replace the entire controller ("assy control box"). Very easy, and usually not much more than option 2.

No matter which option you prefer, at our Web site, we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

Many thanks for posting this repair - I had the SE error with a Samsung SMH9187W and used your instructions to replace the membrane keypad. Worked perfectly. Especially helpful given that at the moment (july 2011) the membrane keypad seems to be the only part available for this repair (both the control panel and box are out of stock everywhere as far as I can tell).

I tried running a hair dryer on low heat over the Keypad/Membrane after dis-assembly for 15 minutes. Worked for 2 days and problem re-occured.
I am going to replace it.

Cause: Dirt, Humidity, Water penetrating the membrane and shorting the circuitry.

Order the below part and replace it.

ASSY CONTROL PANEL;SMH91
Part Number: DE94-02001A

You can order from APWagner ot SearsParts.
Remove three screws from the front-top metal strip/panel of the Microwave.
Remove one screw above the Keypad/Control unit.
Remove Connector Cables.

P.S: Wish the bottom portion of this OTC Microwave was sealed tight enuf to prevent any humidity or dirt from entering the control panel.

Was it worth replacing the assembly? Or did the replacement just **** out after a short while? We're trying to decide if it's worth it or if we should just get a new microwave. Thanks.

Usually that means you have a shorted keypad, and to fix it you usually have to replace the control console/keypad assembly.

Samsung microwave

The "SE" error on a Samsung microwave means you have a shorted membrane keypad.
Since you didn't mention your full model number from the tag on the oven, I'll have to generalize a little.
On some models, the separate membrane keypad is available and you can replace it. If you (or someone you know) might want to replace it yourself, I have uploaded a handy guide with pictures showing you what's typically involved.
On other models, you would have to order the control panel frame assembly which comes with a new keypad. That's an easier do it yourself job, but costs a little more.

There is a video here showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.
If you have any trouble getting the grille off once the screws are removed, slide the hood vent grille to the left about 1/4", then then pull it forward. On some models there are L-shaped clips that fit into a slot to hold bottom of the vent.
Next, disconnect the strip as shown in the photo below, then remove the screws that hold your circuit board in the old frame.

Then carefully (since the display is made of glass) move your board into the new frame assembly.
The easiest option of all (and often pretty economical) is to replace the entire control box / controller assembly.
Skip back up to the video, then note that some connectors may have a lock:

I have a SamSung microwave that keeps beeping SE on display

"SE" means you have a shorting membrane keypad.

On some models, the membrane keypad itself is replaced.

If you (or someone you know) might want to replace it yourself, I have uploaded a handy guide with pictures showing you what's typically involved.

On other models, the keypad is not available as a separate part, so you have to order either the control panel frame assembly (which has a new keypad on it) or a whole new controller assembly / control box.

You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

How fix se error

"SE" error means you have a shorted membrane keypad.

On some models, you can peel off and replace the old keypad.

On others, it's best to replace the control panel frame, which contains a new keypad already.

The simplest way to fix this is a simple DIY solution, to replace the control panel frame assembly, which comes with a new keypad already attached.

It is part number DE94-02001C "assy control panel" and you can order it from the Pros here for about $30 plus shipping.

They may not have it in stock, but if you order it, they can have it in a few days.

The display panel readout has a 5E or possibly a SE on the dislplay constantly

SE error means you have a shorted membrane keypad.

You have a shorting membrane keypad. If and when an oven is coming on or doing anything by itself, this is very dangerous and can result in a fire.

So until it is repaired, please leave it unplugged or leave the door open when it's not in use, and of course one should never leave a microwave unattended while cooking.

We would need the model number in order to provide you with free assistance.

It will be one of these:

SMH9151B
SMH9151B/XAA
SMH9151B/XAC
SMH9151BE
SMH9151BE/XAA
SMH9151S
SMH9151S/XAA
SMH9151ST
SMH9151ST/XAA
SMH9151ST/XAC
SMH9151STE
SMH9151STE/XAA
SMH9151W
SMH9151W/XAA
SMH9151W/XAC

It is usually found on a tag located inside the cooking cavity or around the door frame or controller frame.

Since FixYa is still not notifying us when you respond to clarification requests, you will have to post a new help request with your model number and symptoms / questions, or you may contact us here for this free assistance.

In some cases, it is a simple do it yourself repair.

My Maytag microwave has error code "SE" on the

SE error means you have a shorted membrane keypad.

The full model number would be MMV1153AAB or MMV1153AAW and denotes color.

On this model, the membrane keypad is not available as a separate part, so you would have to order the control panel frame assembly ("control panel/switch" as it's called) which comes with a new keypad.

It's actually a pretty easy do it yourself job.

At our Web site, we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

Next, disconnect the strip as shown in the photo below, then remove the screws that hold your circuit board in the old frame.

Some connectors have a lock:

Then carefully (since the display is made of glass) move your circuit board to the new frame, and reassembly is the reverse of disassembly.

You can get the part from the Pros here. They're our favorite supplier.

"SE" error means you have a shorted membrane keypad.

On some models, you can just order a new membrane keypad and replace it. It's cheap, but a lot of work.

If you (or someone you know) might want to replace it yourself, I have uploaded a handy guide with pictures showing you what's typically involved. It's here.

On other models,
the membrane keypad is not available as a separate part, so you would have to order the control panel frame assembly which comes with a new keypad.
