Xbox 360 is playing dvds but not games
Hi the problem is with your laser the chances are it needs adjusting so it will read the games again now the problem with this is that their are 5 or 6 different dvd drives for the xbox and only a couple can be adjusted but you wont know this till you find out what drive you have.
if the xbox is less than 3 years old its covered by warranty even if you dont have the receipt so have a look on the back of your xbox and check the date if its less than 3 years old go onto the xbox website and log a repair claim they will then come out and give you a working console and take yours back with them.
if its more than 3 years old or it has been opened before then you have got no warranty and you will either need to do the work yourself which involves taking the case off and taking the dvd drive out to find out what make it is, to do this you will need special screw drivers to undo the screws to find out what you need use google and search for xbox 360 repair guide, dont pay for a guide their are loads of free ones on the net, then once you have the case off you need to remove the dvd drive and check the make then using google again type in the following how to adjust the laser on a (give make here) then hit search.
if it can be adjusted you will need a multimeter to do this so you can get the reading off the pots you need to adjust,
now with the dvd once you have it out undo the 4 screws in the bottom then pull the top and bottom case off it, then if the laser is right at the other end and not by the middle of the disk then all you need to do to solve the problem is slide the laser back down the shaft so that its in the middle again near the part that spins the disk round, sometimes the laser moves to far up its runner and gets jammed so this may be the case with yours if the laser is right up the other end far away from the middle then just push it back to the middle and put it all back together and it will then work.
if how ever the laser is at the middle when you take it off then this means either it needs adjusting if it can be adjusted or it needs replacing.
if it cant be adjusted then this means you need to get another dvd drive you need to get one thats the same make as the one you have all ready got,
once you have got another drive you need to swap over the control board off your faulty dvd drive and put this onto the new one without doing this the new drive wont work at all.
your dvd drive is programmed to only work with your xbox so just fitting a whole new drive wont work you need to take the casing off your dvd drive and look at the bottom and you will see a small circuit board this is the control board you then need to unclip the wires and ribbons and remove the board from your dvd drive, now on the new drive you need to take the control board off that as its no good to you at all and put your old control board onto the new dvd drive then put it all back together and it will then be fully working.
if you are unsure what you are doing then please dont try it as you can cause more damage if you break any of the data ribbons,
i fix these for £25 so if you need someone else to do it just shop around and see what price you can get.
