First of all, a 3way dimmer uses 3 wires, the wire you take off the discolored or black screw is your pivot or feed goes to the black of the dimmer, the other two wires splice usually two reds splice one to each.will need more info if you are using a remote switching system

Lightolier 3 way remote wiring

If you have determined the wiring to be correct, then yes, the remote is probably defective..

According to Lightolier literature, your Lightolier OS600 is called a "strap dimmer". Having 540W on a 600w rated switch is pretty close to the limit (90%) of the switch, and will cause the switch to fail sooner than say a 300w load. The 600w rating of the switch applies only if all the heating sink fins are in place. Often times, when installing in a box with another switch or dimmer, fins must be removed to allow the switch to physically fit. If any fins are removed, the rating of the switch is reduced. Page 30 of the manual shows that a 600w strap dimmer that has a single fine removed is reduced to a 500w capacity dimmer, and if both fins are removed, it is reduced to a 400w dimmer. You may find that you will need a 1000w dimmer to reliably gain control of your 540w load, as it will control 600w even with both fins removed. This derating is required due to the heat created by the dimmer. Heat is a killer for electronics, and solid state dimmers are no exception.

Check out page 32 of that manual. On it, are wiring diagrams for dimmers and switches. I believe your is figure "G" that shows the 120v "hot" (black) connected to the black wire of ALL switches, the yellow wires of ALL the switches are connected together, but are not connected to anything else, the 120v neutral (white) connects to the MASTER white wire AND light fixture white wire and finally, the MASTER red wire connects to the light fixture black wire.

It is also important to note that these switches are for standard tungsten incandescent and quartz halogen lamps ONLY. They are NOT suitable for CFL, Fluorescent or other types frequently found in commercial / industrial buildings such as neon or other gas lamps such as Metal Halide, Mercury Vapor, High Pressure Sodium, etc.

I hope this helps & good luck!

I purchased the pr 180 photo electric switch from home depot.there are not any wiring instructions enclosed.I have two black wires and a ground in the wall. there is a green ( ground ) black, red, & a...

Leviton PR180 is a single-pole or 3-way motion activated light switch.
Resources:
http://www.leviton.com/OA_HTML/ibeCCtpItmDspRte.jsp?item=452283§ion=10892&minisite=10026

The green connects to bare ground wire.
The yellow-red is not used EXCEPT to replace 3-way switch. Cap off yellow-red wire when wiring single-pole.

Your single pole switch has two black wires.
One black wire is Hot from breaker, and the other black wire goes to Load.
Turn power on, and test each black wire to bare copper wire. Tester lights up on Hot wire.

Hot wire connects to PR180 black wire.
Load wire connects to RR180 red wire

I installed a Lutron LG 603 P. I have existin three way wiring. Previous light switch operated fine as a three way. The new dimmer comes with two red wires and a black. My wiring is white, black &...

The correct way to wire this switch is the wire that was on the gold or dark colored screw of the old three way switch is called the shunt or common terminal. The wire connected to this terminal is to be connected to the black wire of the three way dimmer. The other two wires are connected to the silver or light colored terminals of the switch. These are the traveler terminals. The traveler wires may be connect to either traveler terminal - it does not matter which.

If you have already disconnected the old switch, simply connect the dimmer wires to the house wires as shown top to bottom in each configuration below until you get it to work as expected:

Config1 Config2 Config3

B R R B R R B R R Dimmer Wires: B = Black R= Red R = Red
R W B B R W W R B House Wires: R = Red W= White B= Black

In two configurations or less, you'll have found the correct wiring for the switch. I hope this helps & good luck! Please rate my reply. Thank you.

I believe my power source is in the ceiling. I just want to wire a light but use a leviton switch and dimmer at the wall. Can't figure this one out. Can you help. There are two red wires, one black and...

Question needs more details. Let me answer as if you have one light and one switch, and one cable coming into switch box from ceiling.

Usually a switch-dimmer combo operates 2 different Loads (lights).
One light is controlled by switch, other by dimmer.

If power source is in ceiling, then one cable enters switch box.
Cable has black, white and ground wires
Old switch had 2 brass screws where black and white wires connect
Black wire brings Hot down from ceiling, and white wire connects back to Load (fan).
Neutral wires are in ceiling box, and not inside switch box, and are discussed.

With new dimmer: Black Hot wire from ceiling connects to dimmer black wire.
White Load wire connects to one of the red wires.
The other red wire goes to another Load, which is unknown at this point.

Add a comment for more free help. Say what cables and wires enter box, and what Loads you are controlling. Also add exact model number so expert can reference manual. Levition instruction sheets and manuals usually have toll free number.

Also take advantage of fixya expert assistance live.
For a price, expert works with you via e-mail or phone while you work on circuit or any do-it-yourself project.

I just purchased 2 of these dimmers from ebay but they do not have the instructions. Both are exactly alike and have 2 wires. How do they install?

You posted under Pass and Seymour rotary dimmer that has two wires.

If your dimmer is like other rotary dimmers, it has a black and red wire.
Or it has 2 black wires.

If your switch has 3 wires, then the dimmer will not work.
If your switch has 2 wires:
Probably both switch wires are black.
One of these wires goes to Load (lights)
The other wire is Hot from breaker box

If dimmer has 2 black wires, they connect to either wire from switch.

If dimmer has black and red wires,
> dimmer-black connects to Hot from breaker
> dimmer red connects to Load
> green (if available) goes to bare copper wire

Recommendation:
If you do not know which wire is Hot from breaker, simply hook up dimmer and see if it works.
If it doesn't, then reverse the wires.

If this information does not fit your specific dimmer, please answer back with more details and we'll get it working.

Can I get a schematic of this dimmer?

a three way dimmer has three wires on it. two are red one is black. the black is the common just like the odd colored screw on a standard three way switch. the two red wires go to the "travelers" to the other three way switch. standard wiring practices: hot goes to the odd screw, travelrs go to the other three way switch. at the remote the load comes off the other odd screw.
