the damper-vent door between the refrigerator and freezer is probably frozen shut therefore not letting the cold air from the freezer enter the refrigerator, deice it with a hand held hair dryer, then check if its controlled by a motor or manually and see if these could be your problem

Top portion of ice box really warm

The freezer gets first dibs on chilled air and there is a fan that should circulate a portion of it into the refrigerator cabinet and I suspect this has failed.
Check the fridge carefully for any vents in the back of the cabinet. When the compressor is running, you should have some noticeable (chilled) air movement from these, especially if you wet your fingers and hold them in front of these vents. If you sense no air movement, the fan has stopped.
To locate the fan and the access to it, try entering your make and model on the Sears Parts Dept. page linked below. They maintain many thousands of line drawing illustrations of all makes and models. If you find yours, you should be able to discern whether this is a DIY job or not.
Good luck-

Kenmore refrigerator with bottom freezer. freezer works, refrig does not. Can you help me find the problem .Also, bar between the upper doors gets real hot.

I had this problem. The Evaporator fan in the freezer was working but no air would be circulated from the freezer into the refridgerator. To test this you open the door of the freezer, and depress the door button(s) of the upper refridgerator doors so that the light extinqueshes in the refridgerator. This will engage the evaporator fan in the freezer. You can check to see if air is venting from the freezer into the refridgerator by feeling the holes at the top most part of the multi-air flow channel in the refridgerator. If air is comming out when the freezer door is open, close the freezer door and feel if air has stopped. If you have kept the upper door buttons pushed in on the refridgerator and now have the freezer door closed, you should still hear the fan running, but may have not air flow with the freezer door closed. The cause of this is the air return channel from the refridgerator to the freezer is either frozen or clogged. My return-air channel was not frozen but clogged by a residue from something that spilled inside of the bottom of the refridgerator. The return-air channel has two vents in the rear-bottom of the refridgerator that exit into the freezer behind the evaporator (cooling coils). You can't see it even if the back interior panel is removed from the freezer compartment.

The bottom line here is that if air is prevented from moving from the refridgerator, back down to the freezer, then your refridgerator will not cool, but your freezer will work just fine. You will not need to replace the fan, unless the fan is not functioning. You may need to check the dampener, to ensure that your multi-air flow channel is open - (allowing air to come into the refridgerator). The multi-air flow channel is easy to remove once all of the shelves are removed from your refridgerator. Only 2 screws holding it in (securing the center rack top and bottom). The top screw is located behind a small plastic cover that can be removed.

That's what worked for me.

The refridgerator portion of my side by side fridge is luke warm. The freezer appears to be working fine. What can I do to fix this?

My guess is, your defrost timer has quit running and ice has built up blocking the passage of cold air from the freezer. It could be the defrost thermostat also, or just a stuck vent door. But I don't think so.

The defrost timer is under the refrigerator, accessible from the front. Normally, it turns on three times per day, turning on a heater element in the freezer, melting ice. The melt water runs down to a plastic tray under the refrigerator where it evaporates. When the freezer warms up, a defrost thermostat then turns off the juice to the heater.

Access the timer from in front. Use a screw driver in the manual advance slot to turn the timer till it clicks. Now it is defrosting. With ice buildup sufficient to block the air passage it may take a long time to melt all that ice.

If you dig into it and try to melt ice yourself, use a hair dryer rather than boiling water. That's what I've been told, although I used the boiling water.

Hope this works for you.

Top refridgerator does not get cold but the bottom freezer works fine

Most of these have a fan that blows the cold air for the freezer into the refrigiator section. If the fan quits running you will experience your problem.

Okay. My appliance is around four years old. The first time the water quit working was about a year ago (ice cubes / dispenser was fine). I just let it go and didn't worry about it. One day months later, I found it functional again. That lasted about a month or two, then it recently quit again. Tonight, I located the water supply line coupling under the unit on the left side under the freezer door, about five inches from the hinge. I separated the coupling (push lock type) and pressed the water dispenser lever. After a few seconds, the water flowed out just fine. I re-attached the coupling, turned the freezer coldness selector to 0 (off) opened the freezer door and fetched my wife's blow dryer. I ran the dryer along the inside of the freezer door near the black door seal frrom the hinge up to the water/ice dispencer compartment. I also ran it all along the back of the dispenseer compartment to the handle side of the door as I am unsure of where the water line runs. After about ten minutes of this, I attempted to dispense water with no luck. I continued with the blow dryer until the plastic and even the door seal were very warm to the touch. I closed the door and attempted to dispense water once again, and this time it worked. I turned the coldness selector back on. This time I set the freezer to 3 and the fridge to 7. I ran several cups of water through the dispenser since it's been sitting in the line for a while before drinking any. As for the "reservoir," I don't where or if one exists, but heating up the inside of the door from hinge to dispenser worked perfectly. Hope this helps someone!
