My mower is having issues with starting after being primed, and then dying about 3 seconds later. It has plenty of gas and I also replaced the spark plug. Any ideas on what could be the issue?

Hi cynthiaka493

Remove your spark plug and check to be sure you are getting fire at the spark plug, if you are then:
Check your fuel filter if you have one, normally they are located in the fuel tank.
Also make sure you are using fresh fuel...and oil mix if your using a two cycle mower or weedeater with the oil to the right mixture and not too much oil as it can cause hard starting.
If the mower/weedeater is over a year old, then I recommend that you buy and install a new carburetor repair kit, because the diaphragm will get hard and that will cause it to be hard to crank.
Sounds like you will need to clean the carburetor or replace your carburetor internal rubber parts like the diaphgram and O rings.
Be sure to use compressed air to blow out all the fuel and air passages.
Be careful when blowing out the passages, because there are sometimes small rubber type seats in the bottom of some of the passages.
Sometimes you can get by with priming the carburetor or using starting fluid and letting it run a few times like that and it will flush the gunk out of the jets, but most of the time you will need to rebuild the carburetor.
Keep in mind that the float for the carburetor must be level when you go to reassemble the carburetor or follow the instrucitons you get with the carburetor kit.
When you clean your carburetor and remove the jet screws, you will first need to lightly seat the jet screws.
But before you lightly seat the jet screws count the number of turns it takes to seat the jet screws from their original position.
Be sure to mark the turns down on a piece of paper.
That way when you put the jets back in, you know to lightly seat them first and then turn them back out to their orginal position before you started.

Engine will start strong after prime, but then dies...fuel seems to get shut off., I checked fuel line, filter, plenty gas

you do not state whether this is a push mower or a lawn tractor, if it is a tractor could be fuel pump issue, for push or tractor mower fuel sediment or dirt plugging carburetor jet and or passages.

TORO 6.5 RUNS FOR 4 SECONDS AFTER PRIMING THEN DIES.pUT IN NEW SPARK PLUG,new gas,but after priming run for several seconds.. it dies again....can you help...sounds like dirt in carb??/ It had run...

Did you check the filter? If the engine doesn't get air they it could cause it to die out like that. Also make sure that there isn't anything in the air line to the carb.

Did you check the gas line and make sure that you are getting enough fuel?

Mower will not start. Have gas, air, and spark.

I am assuming this is a newer mower troy with a brigs on it, that being said there is a small plastic tube (intake tube) on the other side of the carburator that you can acess by taking the heat sheild off of the front of the mower. These are natorios for cracking or braking which would cause a huge vacume leak and a no start condition. They are about 10 bucks and take 10 min. to replace.

Lawn mower will not start. I changed spark plug, gas is in the mower and oil, mower still does not run

If your mower will start when you prime it, and then it dies right away, you have a carberator pluged. If after primeing the mower and it will not even start for a few seconds, you have lost spark. If you have no spark, this can be cause by two things. First, the magnito could have gone back, but this dosen't happen to often, but it can happen. First, check to see that the cable from the brake handle has not stretched. This controls engine brake and its also the kill switch, which kills the spark. Get acess to your engine brake, and you will find a wire connected to a tab. Remove this wire and try to start the mower. If it starts, replace the control cable. If it dosen't start, hook the wire back up and replace the magnito. I hope this is of some help

Wont stay running

Bad fuel or check for water in your fuel! Clean your carb and float bowl. Empty gas into a clear container, if there is two levels of liquid one of them is water. Of course make sure you have good spark plug.
