check if they are rechargeable or alkaline batteries
alkaline batteries do not last if it requires rechargeable batteries
could be a circuit problem so if you have the right batteries , take it to a camera specialist shop for a proper diagnosis and quote

What type battery for powershotA480

Your camera uses 2 AA batteries, but if you use Alkaline batteries they will drain very fast. You are better off buying rechargeable batteries as you can recharge them several hundred times, cheaper than Duracell or Energizer Alkaline batteries in the long run. If you buy rechargeable batteries make sure you get a high mA capacity the higher the mA which stands for Milliamp Per Hour the longer the battery will last in terms of a charge.

Batteries are completely discharged after a few pictures are taken.

Batteries you are using are not up to the job, the camera has high power usage so buy some decent Nimh rechargeables and a charger (make sure you buy at least 2000maH batteries) If you don't want to do that use decent alkaline cells such as duracell. (That will cost you a lot more in the long run)
You will find that the batteries you think are finished will power other items OK, they just cant provide the power your camera requires, so don't throw them away before you try them in your radio or remote.

Just bought a second hand Canon Powershot SX100 IS.

Try cleaning the battery contacts in the camera first with a pencil eraser and then with a cotton swab lightly dampened with rubbing alcohol.

When I insert some batteries the red light begins blinking. I also have some Duracells that appear to be charging but when I place them in the appliance they are dead.

All chargers cannot charge all types of batteries. Are your Duracell batteries NiMH or Alkaline? These indications generally happen when you insert a battery type that is not rechargeable.

Use either good known name alkaline batties such as Duracell or Energizer for examples or rechargeable batteries. Alkalines last much I had the same problem and i use either Alkaline or rechargeables depending on the money I want to spend. Hope this helps.

No sorry to say this is normal for this camera! you may want to look for rechargable lithium batterys (they will last longer in a high drain device such as your camera!

Use alkaline batteries like duracell. Digital cameras support only extra duty batteries.

Can't buy enough batteries

Don't bother with alkaline batteries. They are useless in digicams, and particularly so with some Samsung models. Use rechargeables, or "oxyride" high current disposables.

There may be a setting in the menu for which type of battery you are using, which may help, but still, you are better off not using alkalines. The stupid part is, cameas are often shipped with alkalines in the box! Great way to dissapoint customers! (
